I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that.. The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet. The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window. Hopefully someone will give you other ideas. The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet. Each square equals 1 foot.

Well, it's not exactly to my taste, but it is clearly a well-crafted and expensive piece of furniture. There is no way to make this look modern simply by refinishing it or painting it...and doing so might cheapen the look and make it stand out more. I agree with lazy_gardens that it would benefit by losing the mirrors on the doors. The easiest fix for that would be to take the doors to a cabinetmaker and have him remove the mirrors and install solid panels that would match the wood species and the finish. I'm ok with the center mirror, but the closet would be a lot cleaner-looking if the frou-frou trim at the top could be removed without leaving obvious damage or unstained wood showing.

My son's room in the house we're temporarily living in right now is actually the exact size we're proposing reducing his bedroom to, so we can now visualize the space (it's oriented differently, but the dimensions are almost exactly the same). It's definitely not a large space, but does not feel too cramped by any means (my childhood bedroom was smaller!) The first thing I did was to go over the proposed new layout with my son and he actually quite likes it (he has sensory issues and always prefers a more enclosed space to a more expansive one, which is why he chose that room as his room), so that part is not actually a concern for us. It also seems like we can widen our master closet without needing to take quite a full 2-feet from our son's room, so that will help. I'm not really concerned about how big the room is relative to the other rooms, I'm more concerned about the size of the room as a standalone and if there are any practical layout or other issues I haven't concerned in the proposed new layout. Handy Guy is one of my favorite humans. He’s a contractor now but I knew him in his very early days before he was so fancy. He still comes down to help me do Christmas every year, and fits me in around his bigger jobs. Not only that he has become a good friend. Jlsch, my education and first jobs were in journalism. I worked in radio and newspapers until I became a SAHM. Over the years I have done a lot of volunteer writing as editor of newsletters for PTAs, Junior League, church, Friends of the Library, etc. I also wrote annual reports for smaller charities I volunteered for. I regularly take online writing classes in Oxford’s continuing ed division to continue working with a writing group I met at Oxford when I took summer classes there in 2009. It’s purely avocational; I am writing a history of each of our kid’s lives just for them to have. I was a baby book slacker and this is something unique and more enduring (I hope) than a lock of hair or a hospital bracelet.
