Need Help with Master Bedroom Bathroom/Bedroom Layout - 1970s house

Hi!

We have a house that was built in the 1970s and have a small master bedroom that had a very small master bath and two small reach in closets. The shower was 30" x 30".

We are now ready to remodel the bathroom area, and I wanted to see if anyone could help with some layout ideas/advice? We gutted the bath/closet area down to the studs.

The windows cannot be moved - they are the front facing windows to the house
We cannot make the Bedroom any larger
We would like just a large shower - no tub
We would like a double vanity
We are open to a reach in closet or built-ins in the bedroom
We have one King Bed

Is your bedroom really 14 feet 6 inches long? That would make your hallway almost 5 feet wide at the bedroom entrance. Can the door at the bedroom entrance be moved within that 5 foot space if that is what you have?

Are you in a cold climate?

Karenseb - ty! So I checked and some of my measurements were not correct. The length is 14 feet 6 inches, but the length of the inside of the bathroom area is 10 feet 5 inches. The walls shown are up - so we only really have a little over three feet for the hallway.

We live in PA - so yes it gets cold here.

Again, we cannot move any doors or walls, EXCEPT the location of the door entering the bathroom and the one interior wall that is dividing the bathroom and bedroom.

Have you gotten estimates on this? Will there be foundation work, or are you just cantilevering over for your bump outs? I ask because, foundation work/integrating into old will be much more $$$ than just cantilevering, if that is possible. But, cantilevering has dimensional limitations. If you are planning to have to pay for a foundation, then go for the size you need, and not smaller/more cramped... because an extra foot or 2 of foundation really isn't that big a deal cost-wise once you are there doing the work.

We did work with an architect! And we definitely didn’t intend for it to be that large...it was a last minute charge because the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams would have been cut in half and looked off center and had a slanted ceiling if we didn’t do front to back room. These are great suggestions!

Thanks, Patricia. A few reasons for moving the laundry room; first, the majority of the laundry is coming from/lives upstairs so we prefer to not have to haul the laundry up and down stairs to wash then put away (our previous home had laundry on the floor with the bedrooms and we loved it). Second, the current laundry space is pretty sub-optimal taking over the only entrance to the house from the garage and more than anything we need that space for a mudroom/storage. We only need two bedrooms upstair max which is why we're comfortable losing one to become some laundry/bathroom configuration.

I like the light, neutral background of your walls and rug, but I would add some brightness and personality with colorful bedding and art. If you find a colorful quilt you like, you might choose a color from it to paint your bathroom walls for a coordinated look.

I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that..

The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet.

The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window.

Hopefully someone will give you other ideas.

The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet.

Each square equals 1 foot.

Karen, I really like your plans. You're very creative. My one quibble would be having the bathroom door so close to the bed, which might be too noisy, or unappealing to the person sleeping on that side. I think having the door further down, closer to the foot of the bed might be better.
