Need Help with Master Bedroom Bathroom/Bedroom Layout - 1970s house

Hi!

We have a house that was built in the 1970s and have a small master bedroom that had a very small master bath and two small reach in closets. The shower was 30" x 30".

We are now ready to remodel the bathroom area, and I wanted to see if anyone could help with some layout ideas/advice? We gutted the bath/closet area down to the studs.

The windows cannot be moved - they are the front facing windows to the house
We cannot make the Bedroom any larger
We would like just a large shower - no tub
We would like a double vanity
We are open to a reach in closet or built-ins in the bedroom
We have one King Bed

Is your bedroom really 14 feet 6 inches long? That would make your hallway almost 5 feet wide at the bedroom entrance. Can the door at the bedroom entrance be moved within that 5 foot space if that is what you have?

Are you in a cold climate?

Karenseb - ty! So I checked and some of my measurements were not correct. The length is 14 feet 6 inches, but the length of the inside of the bathroom area is 10 feet 5 inches. The walls shown are up - so we only really have a little over three feet for the hallway.

We live in PA - so yes it gets cold here.

Again, we cannot move any doors or walls, EXCEPT the location of the door entering the bathroom and the one interior wall that is dividing the bathroom and bedroom.

Hopefully whoever is drawing your plans can help with the code stuff. There are some here that are good with that stuff. I'm not one of them, but I have picked up some stuff reading here. I think if you prefer the style where the closet is accessed through the bath, then I would definitely try for a door to the toilet. I would keep it in the footprint of the old hallway as you drew, but nudge the bottom wall down even with the bedroom wall to get 60 inches. Leave the shower as is. Consider having the door open into the bedroom so it doesn't interfere with the WC door, or consider a pocket door. You could also use lateral hinges, and that opens the option of designing the door to blend with the wall for a hidden room look. I think you should reconfigure the closet a bit too. Only 12 inches between hanging rows will almost certainly not be enough to allow access to the back half of the rows. I'd guess you might get away with it for shallow rows, but I think 48 inch rows will need more space. Since narrow doorways are 24 inches, I'd guess that would be a decent minimum, but 30-36 would probably be more comfortable. I really haven't read much about closets though. Hopefully someone with some insight will be able to comment. Those windows make things interesting! I sense you are having the same issues I did trying to design around them, though I think it can be done.

Floating the bed is a nice idea but you wouldn't have room for any type of night stands. An armoire is a wonderful idea for extra storage. Just simple white sheers on the window since you don't seem to need privacy. The floors are beautiful and it's a lovely room. What you've done here is cut down a good-sized bathroom into two small, uncomfortable spaces -- with this much space, you shouldn't have to settle for minimal sized facilities, which is what happens when you chop it up into smaller rooms. As you've drawn it here, the toilet is in a scrunchy-small spot, and if you're going to have a shower-only in a master bath, it needs to be a showstopper of a shower -- not something reminiscent of summer camp. My thoughts: - Get rid of the two-room concept. - Simplify the layout. - This shower is 3-4' wide, making it large and luxurious. At 8' long, you could have a large bench and a second shower head for sit-down showers on the end near the bedroom ... or you could shorten it to 6' (still large) and use that space for a second, small closet opening into the bedroom. - Place the toilet behind a small pony wall. This will set it apart a bit without hampering the room with a wall /will let the room feel larger. Since you're so concerned about smells (which dissipate very quickly), you could keep a candle on the pony wall. - This gives you a 6-7' vanity for the sink, which will allow a single sink centered in the middle and a luxurious 24-30" drawer stack on each side, providing each spouse with ample at-the-sink storage. Don't fall for the idea of duplicate sinks, which would eliminate most of that drawer space and leave you with toothbrushes and razors living on the countertop. - Build in a low, shallow cabinet across from the toilet and sink. This will give you massive storage for towels, toiletries, etc. and display space on top.

I like my first idea best as far as use of space. I know people say not to put toilets on an outside wall. We had one in our last house in Iowa, but we had 2X6 construction. I don't know how high your window is, but I'm guessing the toilet would fit under there. The shower would be 5 feet long or shorter if you want a wider space to get to the toilet. (kind of tight the way I have drawn). You could do a 5 and half foot long shower and do an angled door at the left end to allow room between the shower and toilet. The vanity would be about 7 feet long, unless you do a 60 inch vanity with a linen cabinet at the door. I would reverse entry door swing if you do that..

The second top right could work and you would still have a small closet.

The bottom left plan would require waterproofing your front window.

Hopefully someone will give you other ideas.

The bottom right plan is bigger, but no closet.

Karen, I really like your plans. You're very creative. My one quibble would be having the bathroom door so close to the bed, which might be too noisy, or unappealing to the person sleeping on that side. I think having the door further down, closer to the foot of the bed might be better.
