Carol H,

You bring up a wonderful point about free standing closets. However, it really depends on the person when it comes to no doors. We once had a client that requested glass doors in her wardrobe, so that she could see everything inside, all the time. We tried talking her out of the idea, but she insisted. Shortly after delivery, she had a change of heart on the glass doors because in reality, seeing your clothes through glass doors, or no doors, is not nearly as glamorous as one might imagine.

Although the magazine photos of open hanging and shelving look like a great idea, we all know that life happens, and closets get messy... Sometimes it's nice to be able to tuck the mess away and not look at it.

As for the glass door closet client, we ended up solving her closet problem by frosting the glass doors!

Kindest,

Contempo Space

If you are tight for space consider replacing bulky wooden hangers with the fine felted ones (you can get them in Costco or the Reject Shop for around $20 for 50 hangers). They are great for slippery or strappy items as they grip. I've bought plastic dividers from PinkLily (look a bit like a bookend, sliding on to the bottom of the shelf and ideal to stop stacked items falling over

If you have a spare wall in a bedroom, and 2 feet out from it with another 18 inches to move around in, California closets came to my house, measured my clothing and asked how I hanged them up. They built my wardrobe the whole length of the wall plus helped with 2 other closets, putting a bookcase shelf in the office closet and fixing the small closet originally in the bedroom for my dresser clothing. They also gave me a vanity with sit down area and shelves above and drawers to the right. Total cost for maple hardwood (2003 prices) 3000 dollars. No worries about how to put it in and if your measurements were correct. It works for me and holds up well
