where would you put the laundry room in this house?
Comments (11)@Am.E, I'm clearly not with the pack on this one. My laundry used to be housed in a large closet in my kitchen (large enough for stacked machines, cabinet with laundry sink and tall storage unit to the right). When we first bought our house we did a gut and reno and everyone convinced me to keep the laundry there (it would be SO convenient they all said). Fast forward a few years and two children later ... I hated it. Weekends, the laundry would be piled up on the kitchen floor (I was working full time still then and weekends was when I could strip all the beds and do laundry). My husband wears suits and dress shirts to work M-T so there was often an ironing board up in the kitchen too. My neighbor has a laundry room as part of a mudroom off her side entrance and she too has an ironing board up all the time in her beautiful dining room (more dress shirts over there). I had a beautiful kitchen and it looked like laundry central. We finished our basement a few years ago and down it went (where I wanted to move it originally). It is a large space (just the way the layout of our basement worked) but I use it as a multi purpose room. I'm so much happier. Put in a wall mounted TV and have a large table on castors (ala Martha Stewart) for folding/crafts/wrapping. Put in two large IKEA PAX units to house out of season items (coats/swim gear/etc) and all the wrapping/craft supplies you could want. Also have my sewing machine set up on a nice desk and my elliptical machine (so I can exercise while I do laundry ... LOL). I have a nice chair to sit in and sometimes read a magazine in it while I'm waiting for a load to finish. It's a great space and I use it all the time. Let's be real ... laundry never ends ... I could almost live in that room :) The ironing board is up 24/7 and no one has to see it. There is also a nice hanging rod above it to hang dry my husband's shirts. It's not for everyone I suppose, but I'd much rather head down there and have everything so organized and easy to access. In a perfect world, I might install smaller Miele units on the bedroom level ... maybe (I have the Miele larger units in my basement). It might be nice to have the option to do more than one load at a time, especially as the kids get older and bigger but I wouldn't sacrifice my basement set up to do it. Good luck with your decisions!...See MoreIf you had a laundry room...what would be its decor theme?
Comments (59)I have laundry closets, one on the bottom floor and one on the top. The top is a stackable so there's no room for decor. I wish I'd have made that room just a tad bigger so I didn't have to keep laundry soap in the adjoining bathroom (it's in a huge glass container though and everyone thinks I dropped a fortune on bath salts to fill it heh heh). If I ever have a real room dedicated to laundry I'd do antique butlers pantry as my look. Painted cabinets, marble counters, laundry machines hidden behind cabinets, beautiful lighting, a huge fold and storge area....heaven in the laundry....and I'd like a full time maid to stand there and deal with the laundry as well...as long as we're dreaming! My lower closet is in our family room. I painted the walls in a soft cream and the cabinets in a color called patince (a very soft yellow). It has my giraffe door handles for access, and the doors are painted in metalic chalkboard....See MoreWould you give up your laundry room to add a half bath?
Comments (19)Thank you all again for the feedback. I'm really leaning towards sacrificing the laundry room and going with a powder room. The more I think about it and think about the way I do laundry, I believe the ROI (for me) on a separate powder room would be greater. I'm attaching a drawing, but I there really isn't much to work with. The area outlined it red is initially going to be a family room, but in a couple of years it will convert to an in-law-suite, so we want/need to keep that area separate the way it is (so ignore the bathroom there, that's part of the suite). The room labeled with the red L and blue B is the current laundry room, proposed change to powder room/mudroom. The alcove with the blue L is where I am thinking of moving the laundry, and the red X in the area to the far right is the location of the main floor bathroom in the existing house. And yes, we have walls, I just didn't draw them out! :-)...See MoreGlam laundry room versus laundry/bath, which would you choose?
Comments (31)enduring, thanks, you bring up a lot of good points. i noticed in my existing laundry room that the tiles are all loose. i had assumed it was just because it is old and in need of a refresh, but wonder now if this is an indication of a poorly located washer? i also see that the dryer vents out onto the roof (a lot of old lint here). i didn't know there were ventless dryers! i will have to read up on those. thank you! Jan, initially i didn't think I should do the laundry in the smaller bath since that bath is small as it is. but the exterior wall of that bath is on my deck, which would be much better to clean out the dryer vents that way. so your and hemina's suggestion of moving it to the other bath is warming up to me. i agree with you regarding the attic not being worth tapping into. Laura, thanks for those suggestions. I do think we need a second bath and do feel it will add value. i also am thinking about having the upstairs laundry be a secondary unit stowed away somewhere, and putting the main laundry in my mudroom, since it is closer to where I am most of the day. perhaps a laundry chute would be a fun and useful item to add. i need to work on the location and concept of how i do laundry a bit more, think through all of my home's issues too. thank you so much everyone. it has been such helpful feedback!...See Morecconnie
