Install OTR microwave without upper cabinets
Comments (3)my experience with an OTR microwave is this: I removed my OTR M/W during a kitchen renovation but planned to keep it since it was fairly new, an Advantium 120 and I loved it but was not installing it again as an OTR, just going to use on a cart as a freestanding microwave I am assuming that all otr m/w's are the same as mine: the top is unfinished b/c in a normal application you did not see the top, it is installed to the bottom of the cabs above So that could be an aesthetic problem if 4" is exposed Do you know a good finish carpenter that could custom make your shelf to extend over this section and then jut back to the depth you had planned? You may not necessarily see the top from below but if you have a stairway near by,etc. it may be visible. Also the cord on mine comes out of the top so you would have a gap btwn the top of the m/w and the bottom of the shelf to allow for the cord to run to the back of the wall outlet and where would the outlet be placed? just what my experience has been Another thought; box in the m/w with similar material to the shelves creating it's own shelf below the shelf...See MoreMicrowaves and Upper Cabinets
Comments (4)Why not just get deeper uppers? I have four cabinets that are 15" deep and I wish they all were! I find those extra 3" add a significant amount of storage space...an extra row of glasses, room for wider dinner plates (12" and wider), etc. If you go w/4" or more deeper, be careful about leaving enough work space in front of the upper cabinets...you don't want people bumping their heads on the cabinets while working nor do you want the cabinets to obscure the back of the counters. 3" will be OK, but any deeper may be an issue. If you decided to go 4" or more deeper, consider also pulling your base cabinets out the same amount (or at least 3") to compensate. The big advantage with that is the extra counter & workspace...great! It does make a difference!...See MoreMicrowave above a sink
Comments (11)I suffered through this decision also and designed my kitchen to have a small one on a shelf. After cab install I decided to go with the GE Spacesaver PEM31. It creates a much more finished look and is very versatile for placement as it mounts to the underside of a cabinet. It is compact yet powerful enough. Dimensions are 24w x 11h x 12d, so it is flush with the uppers. You can purchase a built-in kit, and although that adds a more finished look it also requires a wider cabinet. I chose not to go that route. My biggest surprise is how quiet it is-can barely hear it running. Mine is just below eye level for me and I'm 5'8". I really like this placement near the fridge and across from the sink on the island. We are several weeks out from finishing our install so it's not trimmed out yet, but here's a pic of the placement....See MoreDo you prefer the microwave in upper cabinet or lower?
Comments (25)"...it killed my back bending over to see the controls..." That's surprising since, with ours, we don't have to bend over to see the controls, just look down. We're a tall family (ranging from 5'10" to 6'7") and have no problems at all using the drawer. I think the new ones have an even better angle than ours. Regarding price: It costs the same as a built-in MW when you factor in the need for a trim kit for built-ins. However, it is more expensive than a counter-top model. For a counter-top model, I think the ideal height is b/w your waist and the top of your chest. (I don't have my NKBA guidelines book handy to check.)...See Moreprivategrdnr
