How much space do you have between your upper and lower cabs?
Comments (24)I learned something interesting from my contractor when we discussed mounting the wall cabinets a little higher so I could have enough space for certain appliances as well as a light rail. My contractor told me that I'd need to customize the cabinets by either reducing the height of the wall cabinets or increasing the height of the full-height cabinets (like the pantry and double oven cabinets.) Otherwise, mounting wall cabinets higher would result in cabinets where the tops don't line up. jayne p.s. I reduced the height of the wall cabinets to 34 1/2. I probably could have been fine with 35 inches but there's no way I would have known it until the end of the installation so better this way than not being able to cover the undercabinet lighting....See MoreMicrowave in upper cabinet above sink?
Comments (13)When I bought my house, the wall cabinets in the kitchen were all the same height above the counter, including over the sink. Bizarre. It is truly claustrophobic to stand that close to a cabinet and have to lean over to work in the sink. I took that cabinet out while I was refinishing them all anyway and cut it to be the same height as the ones over the fridge and stove. New doors and drawer fronts and a new natural finish and it's good as new. Refinishing the cabinets was my first project, even before moving in. TLDR: That is a rotten location for a microwave....See MoreMicrowave in upper cabinet: how much clearance did/do you allow?
Comments (7)The micros in those inspiration photos are installed incorrectly. The heat/steam from a microwave needs someplace to vent, otherwise you will have damage to the microwave at minimum and quite likely damage to the surrounding cabinetry over time. The optimal solution is to pick the opening dimensions that correspond to "worst case" (largest) for the microwave(s) you might consider. You can always put one in that requires less gap distances (although aesthetically it might be less desirable). For example, if you have 2 microwaves under consideration and with clearances they need openings 24W x 16D x 15H and 25W x 14D x 18H you should have an opening 25W x 16D x 18H. This would let you put either microwave in the space....See MoreHow do you feel about cream upper cabinets and dark wood lower cabinet
Comments (25)We have a small galley kitchen. Eleven years ago we installed quartersawn oak cabinets, the lowers stained chestnut and the uppers stained sand - an off white. I still love it and left the cabinet scheme when we had to refresh some elements about four years ago. I agree that you should use ubatuba on both perimeter and island. At first I wondered if your backsplash tile was too muddy and 'fancy' for lack of a better word but with your ubatuba, I liked it better the longer I looked at the combination. You get so many opinions - including mine! Have you talked to a tiler about the backsplash installation - they'll require a skilled installer I would think....See Moreiamtiramisu
