So what if my kitchen floor is the same as the rest of the house?
Comments (6)As long as it will look good with your kitchen cabinets, go for it. We are installing Tigerwood throughout the upstairs, and though I struggled through all the possible choices of a contrasting floor in kitchen, am really excited about having one continuous look. (Wonder what the original owners would think- they had a different flooring in every single room!!) My Mom has Walnut all throughout her main floor including kitchen, and it looks fabulous....See MoreHow to make my house modern/ paint color ?
Comments (12)OK I've changed my mind about how to approach your home. There are lots of details that have been fabricated on this house that I would change, but to get you over the finish line here is what I suggest. I think the key word here is SIMPLIFY. I would consider painting the complete home a soft greige gray color & select dark greige for the simple garage doors. Here are some colors from Sherwin Williams I tried to see what your home would look like if it was a light color & I think that grey/greige color could really update the appearance....See Morehow far should my kitchen cabinets go?
Comments (24)Looking at your floor plan and the 3d mock up of the new space - I don't think you have enough room for the new plan. Given that the kitchen is 11' wide by 18' - you end up using quite a bit of the space for aisles / walkways. And the exterior corner makes a pinch point. Below is how I would envision the space working if it were re-arranged with an island - with ~4' aisles around the island. I wouldn't extend full height cabinets into the breakfast room - I think they're too overbearing for the space. I agree with herbflavor to go half depth - I would space them so they look more like a buffet / console than a giant wall of pantry... but then I'm not 100% sure about your needs. I just don't think that you have enough room to (a) have the fridge stay on the short wall and (b) have an island that extends more than like a foot. Here is a floor plan based on the 3D mock up... on it in red is the current end of the peninsula - you can see that the new plan is proposing to have the island extend past that spot PLUS add a seat. If you have the 2D/overhead view of your proposed layout, that could help clear up some issues... but again, I don't think yo have the space....See MoreNeed help figuring out how to make my house feel less "busy"
Comments (23)I feel like lighting will make a HUGE difference. Usually when people say "busy" I imagine cluttered, but your decor looks intentional and your house looks lived in but not like a completely kitchy mess. I think it's just the light/contrast letting you down. So don't be so hard on yourself! I'm a photographer and the think that always stands out to me in houses that are really beautiful is how much light gives the spaces texture, definition, and brightness. Because you have darker floors and some darker pieces of furniture in some spaces they all kind of blend together and look really heavy even though they aren't packed too tightly. It's super easy to just plug whatever lamps you have into outlets and flip a light switch that turns on some lights on your ceiling and stop there, but I think the big difference between really put together living spaces and those that don't quite feel as polished is often the intentional use and choices of light. Layering lights at different levels, paying attention to task lighting, and being selective with fixtures can really make a huge difference. I've no where near perfected this in our house yet, but the few changes we've made in some rooms have really had a big impact. I think the right lighting in your home can do wonders and really help establish the ambiance you are going for....See Morejtlashell
