FMQ woes.....:(
Comments (16)LOL Faye! Let us know when you solve that universal question - we will nominate you for some kind of award! And why if you keep checking your bobbin to see how low it is it never seems to run out? But.....if you totally forget about the bobbin it will run out much sooner than it should? And why do quilters, with the upscale machine that beeps at you if the bobbin is "low," hate said machine because it beeps "low bobbin" way too early and way too often. So the quilters just ignore the beep warning and keep on sewing, grumbling all the while. Teresa...See MoreFMQ thread
Comments (10)I have been known to change as well, but sometimes base that decision on what I use for the backing fabric and how pleasing it will make the results. I detest monofilament threads too, and remember back in the sixties and seventies when it first came onto the sewing market and how if it ended up in a seam, it irritated places like necklines and waists and was really bothersome. The thought of putting in a bed quilt (if it were one I did not take off at night and fold, and most of them I don't and just launder often) makes me itch. Comments (11)Thank you all so much for your suggestions. I came home tonight and was excited to drop the feeddogs and quilt away, but thankfully some of your comments prepared me for what happened next...the needle broke again! I decided that enough was enough and I should change tactics and I got out my walking foot. I'm happy to report that I have not broken a needle since changing to the walking foot. The thread has broken a few times, but I've been adjusting my tension and I'm going very slowly and I've just managed several lines with no thread breakage, so I'm definitely on the right track. I really appreciate the comments that FMQ just might not work, because I felt like it was something that I was doing wrong and if I could just figure it out I'd be able to FMQ. I'm happy to finish this quilt with the walking foot. But I thought I'd answer the questions that some of you asked below... I read Angela Walter's blog and she often quilts with 2 layers of batting to add extra poof and show off the quilting. (She also is a professional and long arm quilter.) Anyway, I just wanted to try it to see what it would do to the quilting. I had planned to quilt a feather with lots of swirls and other filler around and I thought a double batting would be interesting. I didn't buy a denim needle, but the next time I'm in a quilt store I'll pick up some and then I can try this again sometime. The needle breaks above the eye. The thread is still in the eye after it's broken. The plate around the feeddogs is not moving or getting in the way - but that was a good thought. Meldy, I wish you were my neighbor because it sounds like you are able to FMQ through a LOT of layers! I'm using a Juki TL 98E, which I think is pretty tough. Thanks again for all of your help. I'm feeling so much better than I was last night!...See MoreFMQ advice
Comments (17)Pirate Girl: Low shank refers to the bar that the presser foot attaches to, in the case of your 342, the shank is pretty close to the fabric, even when the foot is lifted, therefore it's a "low shank" machine and you need low shank feet for it. While it's technically possible to FM quilt without a special foot, you must have some sort of foot to hold down the fabric or the stitch won't form correctly. If you take the foot off the machine all together, you will have a mess. I get my feet from Cindy Peters in Lake City, MN. You can contact her at stitchesintime@earthlink.net. She's going to be out of the state at a sewing machine collector's event in IL until the middle of next week, so you might want to wait to contact her until then. When you do, tell her DamascusAnnie told you to get her most popular low-shank free-motion foot. The foot will cost less than $10 and will make life an awful lot easier for you. Oh, the Needlebar is a site/forum for sewing machine researchers. More pictures of old sewing machines than any other three sites combined! Annie...See Morevasutx (storiedquilts.com)
