MBR Window Treatments

I have a bid for roman shades for our MBR -- north of Chicago. The labor is $100 per panel for blackout lined shades on four windows. Total all-in is over $3K for not very expensive fabric. Seems excessive. I am replacing roman shades, but can't remember the cost 15 years ago.

Am I getting close to the cost for installing wood shutters? Non fading, but how about blocking light? Room has south and west exposures.

Are the shades 1 width of fabric wide? Are they extra long? Shutters will not be light blocking.

I was just quoted $480 per roman shade 44x63 in Maryland without installation. Yes, sticker shock. The online blind companies price comes to $240 with the promo code. I am not sure I want to risk ordering online.

Our home has a double window in the MBR closet, with a drawer unit below that makes a type of bench. We keep our grandson, and that bench has been our changing table. The windows are covered with faux wood shutters allowing us both privacy and light when we need it. I can't see any fading of our clothes, but then we are the faded jeans kind of folks. We had this same arrangement in our last home and copied it for the plan of this one. That deep, wide drawer unit is where we keep shorts and the sort of t-shirt that doesn't need hung on a hanger.

The cabinets look great. We put just a cornice board above several of our windows, having no curtains at all so we don't obstruct the view. Our cornice boards are all wood, but that might be too boxy in your bedroom with all the wood you already have on that wall. You could make a padded cornice board though in a fabric you like. In our bedroom we have inside-mount blinds as you do, and then bought eyelet-top (with holes edged in metal) curtains that we strung on a simple rod with a nice end finial, carrying them out just a bit past the edge of the window. Nothing fussy, a contemporary look. In the daytime they push far back and don't obstruct the view at all, and at night they're heavy enough to keep out the full moon light (DH is a pilot and a light sleeper; he's got to get at least 7 hours). Good luck! Sounds like a fun project.

Hi Christine, I'm a senior in design school, and here is my opinion: On the main wall, I feel you are making your room appear small and short with the way your drapes are hanging across the window like that. You are cutting out valuable space above it which needs to be used. Consider draping the fabric from the point where the two walls meet at the ceiling, and keeping them attached to the angled sides coming down. This will add effect, height, and drama to your room. As for the two smaller windows, I would use a basic roman shade to match your walls, then add a big art piece above your bed. We are not window treatment people either, but have started to add some as we've reno'd/decorated a few of the rooms in our house; two bathrooms and our office. They really do help to finish off a room. That said, we're not covering our kitchen bow window, or the DR bow window, though I might consider something for the DR window at some point--just for the window panes themselves, not to cover the whole bow-unit. We used Hunter Douglas' Designer Screen Shades in the Roman Shade style (ours are mounted inside the frames becuase of our window style/frame depth). The shades are very clean-lined and range in sheerness. With the sheerer weaves/fabrics, you can see outside with them down and they allow a lot of light in.

I would want a local company doing the measuring and installation; then they responsible for any problems. But that might just be me.

happy2b -- Well, that does require an attitude adjustment! lol I can't do installation. My quote was from a decorator/saleswoman from J C Licht who came to my home w/fabric samples and measured. I haven't tried the other chains here: Loomcraft, Eddie Z, etc. My former decorator is no longer in business.

All shades are inside mount; plain (no extra flaps or trim); blackout lining. Each shade is 70" long. One is 88" wide. Bay has one 74" wide and two 22" wide.

The quote was for 18 yards of material. Labor $1800. Installation $275.

The 88" expanse is three ganged casements; three shades seems awkward, but not as heavy per shade, so they might last longer. I have jury-rigged the two big shades with twine to keep them operational after their cords started failing. I have to do *something*... soon!

These are Pella casement windows w/4" casings. I can block some light by lowering the opaque pleated shades between the glass -- which is why I considered shutters.

I think it is a good idea to have other decorating companies come in to compare price, quality, and skill. This may be one of those bite the bullet situations to ensure a good outcome. After all, there is a lot of work and skill involved and the cost of the material.

How much light comes in when only the pleated shade is closed? At my daughter's old house, she used shutters in all the bedrooms. The rooms were not pitch dark in the morning but dim enough not to be awakened at dawn. it sounds like you may be leaning toward a change.

I have 4 windows and a french door to cover. I am replacing ready made roman shades from Lowes that I purchased 16 years ago. The only thing wrong with them is the color faded. They were meant to be temporary until we remodeled the master at the riverhouse. All the other projects took precedence. Now finally I have a newly decorated master and remodeled bathroom. The price I got from a local upholstery store that I have used over the years was for only the material and workmanship.

I am not sure if the companies you are consulting are in my area, but I am thinking of exploring that route too. I am very hesitant to use one of the online blind companies. Maybe I could order only one to try, but then I fear the color lot will be noticeably different. Everything is a process/project.
