MBR window treatment?

After several years of debating the merits of getting rid of our dressers and going with a wall of cabinets in our bedroom, we finally did it. It's a huge improvement to our 13 x 14 bedroom, but we didn't even know if we were going to like it until the installation was done. We do - it so frees up what space there is, and the drawers are big enough to easily hold the kind of things that we had wedged into undersized dresser drawers before. The window on this wall is the only window in the room and it faces pretty much due north. (It's really hard to get a photo of a wall with so much light coming in the window! It's even rainy today and it was still hard.) The window looks unfinished to me. We have an inside mount pull-down blind on it which I can't reach anymore, but that's not critical because we rarely close it. We're on a hill, there's nobody out there, and we love the view of the trees and sky in the morning. There is 2-1/2" space to one side of the window and 2-3/4" on the other side. Ideas?

Oh! When I went in to measure the space to each side of the window, there was a beautiful, huge hawk sitting on the fence. He comes around to see if my husband has any fresh gophers for him. Not today. Unfortunately, by the time I got back with my camera/phone, he was flying off. Here's the view anyway. (The curtain is the backstop to my archery range. It's all blown together from the wind. Not lovely, but it's the only place where I can back up 40 yds.)

Love the drawers. What is your decorating style? I do think some type of material should be on the windows, even if you hang blinds or shutters, to soften up the area.

I never could get the hang of archery. We had a similar set-up years ago. I blew at it. lol

The cabinets look great.

We put just a cornice board above several of our windows, having no curtains at all so we don't obstruct the view. Our cornice boards are all wood, but that might be too boxy in your bedroom with all the wood you already have on that wall. You could make a padded cornice board though in a fabric you like.

In our bedroom we have inside-mount blinds as you do, and then bought eyelet-top (with holes edged in metal) curtains that we strung on a simple rod with a nice end finial, carrying them out just a bit past the edge of the window. Nothing fussy, a contemporary look. In the daytime they push far back and don't obstruct the view at all, and at night they're heavy enough to keep out the full moon light (DH is a pilot and a light sleeper; he's got to get at least 7 hours).

A king size bed is 76" wide x 80 long. For a headboard, I'd conservatively add 3" per side, bringing it to 82" wide but that could be more depending on the headboard. I believe ours is closer to 86" wide. Nightstands are a total unknown because you don't have them yet and they could be as small as a 15" wide table or as large as double chest of drawers. We don't have matching nightstands but each is approximately 36" wide. Our headboard overhangs the window trim in our room just a bit because we planned it for a queen bed - live and learn. Our nightstands sit in front of the windows on that wall. With a bed width at 86" and nightstand at 36" and you want a few inches of breathing room between the bed and nightstands ....... you would need roughly 10 - 12 feet BETWEEN the windows if you don't want the nightstands in front of the windows at all. Then, you don't want the windows shoved into the corner so need space from the window to adjoining wall. Do you have that kind of space in your proposed MBr?

Hi Christine, I'm a senior in design school, and here is my opinion: On the main wall, I feel you are making your room appear small and short with the way your drapes are hanging across the window like that. You are cutting out valuable space above it which needs to be used. Consider draping the fabric from the point where the two walls meet at the ceiling, and keeping them attached to the angled sides coming down. This will add effect, height, and drama to your room. As for the two smaller windows, I would use a basic roman shade to match your walls, then add a big art piece above your bed. If your state has a disclosure law, you should disclose the condition of any appliances that convey, also if you continue to use the appliance between the time of sale and time of closing and the appliance breaks down, you're responsible to repair or replace it if it conveys. After the closing, in our state a home owner's warranty is common practice and would probably cover this appliance. As to your other questions, you can of course write anything in or out of a contract, if you want to exclude something you can simply write it in that the item does not stay. However, in most areas around the country that I have lived in window treatments stay ( although I have had a seller specifically exclude MBR window treatments that matched her bedspread), if the shelves are built in, or closet shelves they stay, you should always show the house with the light fixtures you intend to leave with the house, smart to change them out before you show the house if you're taking any heirloom chandeliers etc. with you, fireplace tools, we've always taken ours but have found in a few houses others left them behind, of course any fireplace screens do stay. Water softener if owned is treated like a water heater - it stays.

I think contemporary is minimal, like less is more, so maybe just a simple crown moulding and maybe a pin striping. But, here a few samples for inspiration. Here's a tray ceiling. Kinda glamorous. How about a blue sky? There are low-voltage lights right above the crown. A soft faux linen, ceiling medallion and a gold pin stripe between the crown Not contemporary, but one in each corner along with the stripes makes it interesting.

I would mount a woven wood shade at the ceiling, that would fill in the entire space if closed.

Those cabinets look terrific. Since that is a North window and the cabinets are dark, I think I would use a light colored fabric. I might use a roman shade and go all the way to the top of the wall and to both sides. Fill the space.

Nice storage.

If you want to go with a softer look go with a roman shade. You could also go with a solar shade with a high openness to block out some of the light be keep the view. It won't do much for energy savings but you can have the shade down and still see out. Check out blindsgalore they have a ton of good stuff. I have used them many times.

The top of the cabinets under the windows is the perfect place for a window seat cushion and pillows!

I would definitely do a valance that runs from side to side and ceiling to just clipping the window below the window shade so it blocks minimal light but adds warmth and color...have it coordinate with the bedding in your room....

I vote for a roman shade. I think you need some softness/fabric there.

I think it's too high for a window seat. It would be like sitting on top of a dresser.

I think pretty Roman shades - with ties on each end. Sort of soften that area
