What kind of window treatments for MBR?

I am deciding on what kind of window treatments to do for our master bedroom. Right now I have a couple of double-width linen pinch-pleat curtains on the main wall. As you can see from the photos, when you enter the mbr from the 40-ft long hallway you see three large windows in front of you with enough wall space on either side to comfortable show off two pleated lined curtains panels (direction I am leaning in). The difficulty lies in the fact that the right hand side walls turns and there is a window right there, just inches in from the corner. As you can see from the pictures, the wall to the right of the 3-window one which is on your right as soon as you walk in has the window along the left side, very close to the corner, and the other window on the right side is 12 inches from the other wall. We have our king-size bed centered along this wall and will keep it there: there really is no other option. We are planning to purchase an upholstered bed with most-likely tufted headboard in neutral fabric color (unless we go for a Lee Industries one like I saw in TH several months ago: love at first sight but will probably die at $). There IS room to put panels on these windows as well, I THINK, if we were to do 5 total for the room: 1 on either side of the 3-window wall, then one on left side of bed, and one on either side of the right window on the right side of bed.

I am wondering if any of you think it would be BETTER to go for some sort of roman or balloon shades instead, but they would NOT be operational. We would probably go for the bamboo shades down the road if we feel the need for privacy, and the curtains would also be decorative, not functional. I am leaning towards curtains because I feel that long window wall almost screams for them, but would like feedback. I have some B&F toile in blue and yellow could use for either shades or curtains possibly, but have always had an affinity for silk curtains: either goblet or inverted pleat. Thanks in advance for your feedback! PS: chairs do NOT have to stay and will be looking for other nightstands eventually as well.

Hi Christine, I'm a senior in design school, and here is my opinion: On the main wall, I feel you are making your room appear small and short with the way your drapes are hanging across the window like that. You are cutting out valuable space above it which needs to be used. Consider draping the fabric from the point where the two walls meet at the ceiling, and keeping them attached to the angled sides coming down. This will add effect, height, and drama to your room. As for the two smaller windows, I would use a basic roman shade to match your walls, then add a big art piece above your bed.

I think this is one of these things that should have a "post-game analysis" of sorts. I don't mean to be critical, but this will be analytical and it may help someone else who builds a house in the future. The idea here is nice, and the essentially linked windows are similar to a true palladian window, with the tall window in the middle and subordinate windows on either side of a height equal to the bottom sash...fine. But you've kind of backed yourself into a design corner because these particular windows need to be covered, and yet you don't want to cover them too much, or all the time. A palladian window in an 18th or 19th c house would be treated like this: The walls would be thick enough that shutters would fold over the small windows and fold back into shallow pockets in the jambs when you wanted them out of the way. The larger window would be elaborately draped because of the curve or possibly mostly left bare,depending. If you were to design this over again---or if your architect does do this again in another house---a peak that was wide enough to allow a single rod or top mounted treatment that was wide enough to cover all three windows completely should be one thing considered, or more room for shutters to be folded back would be another, a shorter or differently proportioned window in the middle another. I think that windows are often designed as if they can all be left uncovered because nobody's windows need to be covered for privacy or light control. And really the opposite is true. Almost Every window should be designed if it will need to be covered for privacy or light control, and if it doesn't great, but if it does you are not faced with several less than ideal options and possibly some really awkward options but no perfect options.

I would do some blinds on the bottom and leave the arch since this is a play room make sure the blinds have no cords.

If you do drapes, you will need to keep them within that deep frame so the baseboard heat doesn't get trapped under them. The hems would stop at the sill. Or you could do floor length drapes that are kept open all the time. This is to simply trim the window if you feel like shades alone are too plain. I've looked into top-down cellular shades for my large windows and determined that they would be too fussy and hard to keep straight. They break easily. The bigger the window, the more annoying they will be to deal with. Besides, top-down is more like for homes where people are trying to get some privacy from the street, not a problem in your high rise. For you I recommend room darkening roller or honeycomb shades. (or blackout if it's east facing, but otherwise I don't recommend blackout if you don't need it.) Don't get the "pull down" style. Get the ones that can be operated with "continuous loop" cables, or even motorized if you are feeling fancy. If you need to filter the light (like to keep the room cool), some people get two sets of shades -- one opaque, one sheer -- and install the the opaque ones in front. Your frames appear deep enough for that.
