Tricky Window Dressing Dilemma
Comments (11)I think they look nice from the outside of the house. The south-side of our home borders relatively closely on another home, so we made efforts to put in windows on that side of the home that were interesting, but high up and not huge, so as to achieve privacy. That was the thinking. We have a similar set of windows in our dining room downstairs, also on that side of the house, so from the outside I like them. I also like them inside. The east wall of our bedroom has a very large window. But other than that, there are no windows except for these south-facing ones. So I would like to keep them unless everyone thinks they are a disaster. I am going to do some looking into these "mini cellulars" lascatx mentions. Any brands people have liked for this kind of window dressing?...See Moreneed some urgent advice on window seat vs. bay window
Comments (25)Sophie - I disagree. I did not design this. I have no pretensions to being a designer and for many other aspects of the renovation we have indeed had formal plans drawn up. [I also know from experience that having an architect involved is far from a panacea .... but that's another story or stories]. For this room we knew we needed to replace the large leaky picture window and instead of replacing in kind we asked whether it would be possible and reasonable to build a window seat and what would be involved. We showed the contractor many pictures of window seats and shared the required dimension ranges (not exact dimensions) from various articles. He said a bay window would take care of it and no separate plans were required. I include the manufacturer's literature excerpt that says their Bay and Bow windows can be used as window seats. It seemed (and actually still seems) a reasonable solution. Projection Window Bay and Bow windows are like a piece of fine furniture for the façade of your home. These unique windows project from your home, creating additional space that can be used for a variety of purposes, such as a window seat or displaying meaningful trinkets. Our vinyl windows (typically double-hung or casement windows) are inserted into a solid frame to create this unique look that adds style to any home. Bay windows typically have three lites (one central fixed lite and two flanking operational lites) at 20-25-degree angles. Bow windows most commonly consist of four lites, all of which can be fixed or operational, set at 10-15 degree angles. The contractor asked us to describe what we wanted to the window vendor as well and we did. We never used the term bay window. We only talked in terms of window seat. The window vendor also did not dissuade us or suggest we needed an addition instead of a window. The window vendor spec'd the window we needed. Given that we have 8 foot ceilings - this would have been a really good place to catch that a 52" bay window wouldn't be long enough to provide a seat at a reasonable height off the floor. I think that's the key flaw here - plus someone's telling us that (unless I'm wrong) we weren't going to get the wood backing. Comments (11)Well, after working to finish the laundry and garage cabinets and then being away May through July, the curtains are finally up and I thought I'd post a follow-up. Thanks to all for the advice, because I think having the rod hang at the bottom of the soffit looks great! The aqua curtains go very well with my "all aqua, all the time" kitchen and the polished nickel rod is similar to the handles on the DW, range, and fridge. I put the rod wide enough to be able to show the wood trim around the doors. Also, while looking for curtain rods, I found the most adorable little bird finials also in aqua! Yes, I'm a sucker for cuteness-in-aqua. Thanks again for your help!...See Morewindow treatments for off-centered window
Comments (8)I've had windows like yours in the past. you could do an "inside mount" rod -- kind of like how you mount a shower curtain. you'll need to mount the rod only about 1" down from the ceiling. that might be the weirdest prat of this setup unfortunately. use really light weight curtains (like sheers) so the rod doesn't flex down in the middle. get the pocket style (not grommet or rings). the idea would be that most of the time, the curtains are kept open, flanking the sides and serving as just an accent. this method will at least hide the industrial looking rod mounts. the trick will be to find a single rod that spans that entire width. you might have to go custom. in the past, I've actually used a galvanized pipe spray painted black. they're really strong, and you can get them cut to the perfect length at whatever store where you buy it....See Moregthigpen
