Window in MBR Closet?

We are still in planning stages, but there is a small octagonal window in the closet with a built-in bench on the plan. Trying to decide if I should leave it or take it out. I love the idea of natural light, but have heard complaints of fading clothes.

Window is north-facing. The closet is large (13 1/2 by 10 1/2) and we were thinking of actually using a portion of it to put a small piece of exercise equipment w/ a wall-mounted TV in there since we don't need that much space for clothes. So it would be nice to have the light in those times.

Any opinions? If we put a window covering over it would that be sufficient?

Sounds lovely. Leave it in, especially if you will be doing some "living" in your closet. North facing windows do not fade clothes.

There is still UV present in the light from North facing windows.

While it may be lower than South facing, it is not zero.

The cabinets look great. We put just a cornice board above several of our windows, having no curtains at all so we don't obstruct the view. Our cornice boards are all wood, but that might be too boxy in your bedroom with all the wood you already have on that wall. You could make a padded cornice board though in a fabric you like. In our bedroom we have inside-mount blinds as you do, and then bought eyelet-top (with holes edged in metal) curtains that we strung on a simple rod with a nice end finial, carrying them out just a bit past the edge of the window. Nothing fussy, a contemporary look. In the daytime they push far back and don't obstruct the view at all, and at night they're heavy enough to keep out the full moon light (DH is a pilot and a light sleeper; he's got to get at least 7 hours). Good luck! Sounds like a fun project.

I also thought about doing panels on those two windows and stacked back to the outsides. But if you ever wanted to close them, I donÃ¢ÂÂt know that you would be able to do that without them hitting the rad. I think the idea of roman shades is lovely. I like the first trim the best. but I am a bit concerned that it is not quite wide enough to make any difference. I would just do it on the bottom of the shade, a couple of inches up from the edge, but I think I would consider addding a narrower grey ribbon on either side of the 1Ã¢ÂÂ grey, with just a little breathing space between them. Just wondering if the linen will be substantial enough to hold the roman shade pleats? Will the blackout lining make the fabric crisp enough to hold over time? In the alternative, you could leave the trim off the body of the blinds, but do a small self valance and put the trim an inch or two in from the edge of that. Great way to pull the eye up in the space, too. A very restful, pretty space.

The builder may have been required to place outlets that high for code (flooding etc). If this were my place, I would extend your closet built ins (or install them) to fit the entire space as one and treat it as an extension to your master closet vs treating it as a laundry room. Maybe a pull out counter above the w/d to give you additional room for your sorting, but hides away when not in use. You should consider how you use this laundry room and if this is the home's only laundry (a family of 3 vs a family of 8 would need more space) and decide what your family needs.

I think it is a good idea to have other decorating companies come in to compare price, quality, and skill. This may be one of those bite the bullet situations to ensure a good outcome. After all, there is a lot of work and skill involved and the cost of the material. How much light comes in when only the pleated shade is closed? At my daughter's old house, she used shutters in all the bedrooms. The rooms were not pitch dark in the morning but dim enough not to be awakened at dawn. it sounds like you may be leaning toward a change. I have 4 windows and a french door to cover. I am replacing ready made roman shades from Lowes that I purchased 16 years ago. The only thing wrong with them is the color faded. They were meant to be temporary until we remodeled the master at the riverhouse. All the other projects took precedence. Now finally I have a newly decorated master and remodeled bathroom. The price I got from a local upholstery store that I have used over the years was for only the material and workmanship. I am not sure if the companies you are consulting are in my area, but I am thinking of exploring that route too. I am very hesitant to use one of the online blind companies. Maybe I could order only one to try, but then I fear the color lot will be noticeably different. Everything is a process/project.

Our home has a double window in the MBR closet, with a drawer unit below that makes a type of bench. We keep our grandson, and that bench has been our changing table. The windows are covered with faux wood shutters allowing us both privacy and light when we need it. I can't see any fading of our clothes, but then we are the faded jeans kind of folks. We had this same arrangement in our last home and copied it for the plan of this one. That deep, wide drawer unit is where we keep shorts and the sort of t-shirt that doesn't need hung on a hanger.

Keep the clothes or the window covered.

On the other hand, I have pics of recent multi-million dollar homes where the trend seems to be skylights. Maybe the thinking is if you have to worry about replacing ruined clothes you're just not rich enough to own such a house.

We have a window in our closet. I use wood blinds and am pretty happy with the arrangement. In our case the exterior would have looked odd had we not put a window in our closet.

I would leave the window for the natural lighting it will provide. Plus the light from the window will realy open up the space. If you are using low-E windows, there shouldn't be an issue with your clothes fading.

i have windows in my closet. i'm planning a seating area directly beneath with a sofa and end tables. it's hard to photograph the whole room because of the shape. it's 26' long (all shelves and hanging space) and kind of narrow, but it opens up at the windows to 12' wide.

I have an east facing but shaded window in my closet, with plantation shutters. You can't beat natural light when you are trying to select clothes and I love to open the window to freshen the entire room whenever I can. I have seen no evidence of fading after 4 years.

I would leave it in. By the time anything fades from light, it should have been discarded. I confess I still have suits from the 70's but I can't wear them.

I am surprised people haven't seen fading. One of DH's silk ties faded horribly in an east facing room. The room isn't in use, it is used for storage right now. I went in there looking for a tie for a funeral and he had left it out and folded over. You can clearly see where the sun faded it. Maybe dark silk fades easily?

Yes, silk fades easily. And east facing would get a lot of light.
