Contemplating small home addition
Comments (18)After MANY conversations, debates and discussions - my husband and I are meeting an architect at our house to help us figure out the best (and most economical) way to add to our kitchen. The more my husband and I talked, the more "wish list" items because "must haves." The architect will be coming over on Saturday morning so that we can tell him what we'd like, and then we'll go from there. Things we know we want now: - the laundry room moved into the addition, so that the current laundry room can be a mudroom entry from the garage (we NEVER use our front door and yet that's where all our shoes/coats are currently stored) - convert the current pantry into a "beverage bar" area (we host a LOT of parties) and have a better/bigger pantry in the addition. - bigger ovens - we have teeny tiny ovens (the cookie sheets we moved into the house with wouldn't fit!) and my husband wants brand new ones - this will require new placement as the current location won't allow for larger ovens. As for the family room, we are definitely going to investigate going further back by 5 feet, so that we can go ahead and put a simple 5x8 private bath above it for the guest room on the second floor. The family room part of the addition is not definitely - it's still strictly on the "wish list" as opposed to the "must have" list. If we're able to do the kitchen remodel/addition with a reasonable budget then we'll see about also doing the family room/bath portion of the addition. Either way, thanks for your responses - it definitely got me thinking and made me realize that we needed to bring a professional to help us create a vision that will not only add functionality, but be a good investment as well. I'll let you know what he comes up with! With any luck we'll have plans in place by June and begin construction soon after that!...See MoreWhat plant are you anxiously awaiting the return of in the spring?
Comments (49)OK , its official, I am anxious over my Plumbago. I planted it right before the first VERY EARLY unlooked for freeze. I think it was making tiny green earlier this spring, but then we got the VERY LATE unlooked for freeze and bye bye green shoot.. I just dug it up and scratched a brittle twig below soil line and YAY it is green! My Mexican honeysuckle is in the same dead looking boat but it has made an ever so tiny appearance. I was apprehensive of a ammonia ciliata that was advertised as liking the caliche flat limestone marl in habitat here in Travis county. Well I had some habitat for it and it is dead sun and unfriendly as all get out. It has sent up three stalks and is putting on some blooms. I was hovering like a worried crow over a barren patch of gravel mulch where there might be a subtererenian silver leafed ironweed from the Big Bend. We did have a wet winter and I was worried that it might have been too wet for this new species that says "For Western Gardens only". I am on the wet side of that no mater how much I moan and groan about how dry it is here. I think I see something but I also have seeds volunteering in the area. I am chanting to myself. " I will not dig it up, that is like picking at a scab"...See MoreKitchen remodel - Do my color/counter/floor choices go together?
Comments (12)beckysharp, I know the color on their website is not accurate at all! It's very much a gray color. We liked the sample at Ikea, went home and looked at it online to order a sample, and definitely wondered if we had seen the color correctly based on the website! But the sample we got is indeed gray like Ikea's. And I do really like the color. We have already paid for it although we can still get a refund since we haven't started the install process yet (Ikea's price was $1400 less than the exact same thing at a local countertop store, so we prefer to stick with Ikea's options). Anyway, I'm much more inclined to change the flooring since I'm not in love with our current flooring. LVT planks are a possibility but my husband isn't excited about adding even more work to his long to do list, and I have been loving the cushioning of the sheet vinyl after having ceramic tile in our last kitchen. Looks-wise I'd go for hardwood in a heartbeat, but I don't think it's practical for us....See MoreContemplating Kitchen Remodel
Comments (17)I have really appreciated the honest feedback here. My friends all tend to say "It looks GREAT!" no matter what I suggest and my dad continues to advocate for leaving it alone... but he is my helper. (More accurately, I am his helper) I am considering a lot of your suggestions. I think I became overwhelmed by how many things I DISLIKED about the kitchen that all I could see was it all going away and starting from scratch. The only kitchen I have done before was a new build so I did get to start from scratch, which was fun! :) I have included a drawing of what is current and what I am proposing. The current one includes neighboring rooms. The proposed ones are just the kitchen. I am thinking that I would keep all of my lower cabinets (Except for the desk) and actually, I am strongly looking at how to use my uppers too. I would like to add sliders etc... inside the cabinets, but I could add that a little down the road if need be too. I REALLY like the changes you have suggested for the pantry. One thing that is really stumping me is my uppers. Currently the soffit sticks out in front of the cabinets 12 inches. It is why I dislike it. It feels so crowded and closed off. I was thinking, if I could cut them off flush with the front of the cabinets that would help a lot. My dad said that would be very difficult and I'd need to remove the old ones and just build new ones. He suggested just removing the soffit and having it open above them at that point. My original plan was to purchase new uppers to go to the ceiling, but I am trying to use what I have instead. I have included another picture that looks in towards the sink where you can see the depth of the soffits and where I was hoping to shrink or remove them. I would still need to purchase cabinets to go where my desk currently is to surround the refrigerator. I was thinking about possibly having them VERY different so they look like an accent instead of trying to blend them in with the existing ones. Perhaps painted ones, glass doors, or some other unique look. (I do not prefer glass though) I do have the same doors on uppers in the laundry room and also lowers in my bar and master bathroom. I would not be opposed to taking any of those doors and replacing the doors in that area with something different as they're not visible from the kitchen....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
