Comments (48)I love this thread too! So many beautiful homes! Amber, I just took a look at your photos... such a terrific home! I liked all your bay/alcove windows, your fireplaces and your stairs best! I'd love to see some pics of the exterior. Looks like you have a victorian? Our home is modest compared to many here, but I love the victorian door hardware, and we have a twist doorbell too. The bell is still there but it makes a clacking sound more than a ring most of the time. Needs new inside parts! I also love our heart pine floors, wood work and porch. Maybe I'll post some pics later, just for fun. Hope others will post more photos. I love looking! Cheers, -Kim...See MoreWhat is your favorite feature about your house?
Comments (20)I'll definitely 2nd the completely separate laundry, I would have liked our laundry room to be a bit bigger for a table but just the fact that if I'm crazy busy and can't do anything but wash the clothes and they stay in there on the floor and I just close the door, it's SOOO nice, greatly reduces the stress that endless laundry brings. We also put our main laundry upstairs with the kids bedroom and added a separate washer/dryer hookup in our master bedroom closet for a small stackable. Our house build I also love that we have a an island big enough for 5 chairs and our breakfast "nook" (which isn't really a nook, it's just in between the kitchen and the family room) is big enough for a dining room table and we can also add a foldable table for when we have large family gatherings. Everyone can be in the same room, which was never possible when we had a formal dining room. We also put in an attic fan or whole house fan. It's great for energy savings if you want to reduce your a/c usage. At the end of the day when the kids finally go upstairs to get ready for bed we open the tops of all the windows and turn on the attic fan and it pulls in the cool night air, cooling it down fast. We also put in a full freezer and full freezerless refrigerator in the kitchen, side by side so it looks like one unit. We can fit everything we want and not constantly losing stuff in the back of those super deep fridges. We also had insulation put around our 1/2 bath so that we can't hear people in the bathroom and it really works!! I really, really wish we had done that around our master bedroom so if one of us has to get up early it doesn't wake the other still sleeping. We really like our blue star open burner all cast iron rangetop. We just take off a grate and put in a round bottom wok and we're stir frying. Blue Star is a great price for what you get. The cast iron stays looking better than stainless steel and we love the open burners. I love the layout of our kitchen. The kitchen is mostly used for those quick and easy meals, like cereal, sandwiches, or reheating leftovers. We really thought about that in the design. We open the fridge take everything out and put it on the island right next to it. Then we have the microwave in the island and the pullout trashcan right under where we put things. So it's easy to brush trash and crumbs into the trash and heat stuff up and our sink is close for washing. But for more involved meals we spread out from there which really works if there is more than one person in the kitchen. That's where our sink in the island comes in. We've had 6 or more people in our kitchen preparing food and there was plenty of room. We have a place for a formal dining room but we made it big enough to be a formal living room which is how we use it. I love it, I sit in there for some peace and quiet while the kids are in the family room. It's close enough to keep tabs on what it going on but separate to relax. I could go on, but I linked some pictures to my house we built, we since added some things, like built ins in the family room. I do wish our mudroom was bigger and had a door b/c it needs to be completely functional and it's always messy. I think I would have liked to have a desk in there since that is where mail ends up, oh and a table or something for all those kids crafts that are messy and don't get cleaned up right away....See MoreMay I see your favorite room in the house? Comments (73)My favorite is our dining room. It is half of our two story great room living/kitchen/dining room. I like that the room is big enough for a large table, and since it is shared with the living room i can always rearrange furniture to accomodate everyone at the dining table if needed. Big windows let in tons of natural light and we have enjoyed watching deer pass by as we have supper. It is the natural gathering place as soon as guests come in the door and they feel welcomed right away, rather than a little formal foyer that everyone gets stuck standing in. It is a new build, and I am still in the process of decorating and getting furniture, so be kind- i know I have 3 different kinds of chairs at the table right now; and that the yard and driveway are not done yet. :)...See MoreWhat are some of your favorite, easy, inexpensive home DIY ideas? :)
Comments (29)My house is 8 months old. I have a list of projects I am planning to DIY like we are going to be changing out the builder installed mulch and shrubs with red cedar mulch and new plants. That is something I can do and not mess up. After living here for 8 months the houses personality is starting to take shape. I know it sounds funny to say it has personality but my master bath and bedroom tell me it is not happy being agreeable grey and would prefer to be Iced Blue Silver so my son told me as his Christmas present to me he would get me paint and paint my bathroom and bedroom. When I placed the furniture in my bedroom I thought I had the perfect set up but after being here awhile and once the room is painted I have in visioned my bedroom furniture in a different configuration and can see the whole design layout with new paint color and drapes in my head. I hope it all looks as I think it will or my son will have to move my furniture back to the original spots. I am going to finally tackle drapes/rods and decoration my living room and dining room. When I moved here I wanted to live here a bit before decorating rather than rush out and do it right away. My house looks bare right now because I have nothing on the walls and only wood blinds on the windows. I know I have my furniture placed where it will stay so ready to hit the stores for some color and pretty things to put out. Projects I feel better left to the professionals and heck someone has to keep them in business so it might as well be me. :) I know my limits. Granite in my kitchen and bathrooms. I bought the house without it because I knew I'd want to change things as I got more comfortable in the house. My livingroom, kitchen and dining room are all open to each other and I want to match the granite to the decor I am going to use in all 3 rooms to tie them together. I have a 5'x4' tiled entry way at my front door that leads down to the kitchen dining room area. They carpeted all the way from where the tile ends. My garage door entry is right across from the kitchen and that area is carpeted but the kitchen is tiled. It looks silly and dirt is starting to build up near the garage door entry even though I have a rug there. So I want to have the carpet ripped up in that hall area and have tile installed from the kitchen all the way to the front door entry so it is easier to keep clean. I want to have a 15'x20' sun room put on the back of my house. If I tried to do this myself it would probably lean and leak....See Morebeckysharp Reinstate SW Unconditionally
