New Weeping Blue Atlas Cedar Questions
Hello all!
Just planted weeping blue atlas cedar and was hoping for feedback on current training aid and input on keeping/removing what looks to be ‘dead’ tips on some leads.

Comments (18)Question: Several people mentioned the importance of zone - whether a weeping blue atlas cedar will be hardy in a particular zone. How do you factor in other conditions? I live in southeastern VA on the Chesapeake Bay. The water that surrounds us moderate temps on both ends. In spring, temps warm up slowly. In winter, temps get cold later. Usual 1st frost is in late Nov - early Dec. This year, our first hard frost was in late Dec. The big issue here (and it's a BIG issue) is wind. It's not usual to have winds of 30-35+ mph to blow for days, causing plants to dry up and die. In winter and early spring, NNW winds are the main problem (we are fairly well protected from NNE winds). Although this situation is comfortable for people, several days of warm/hot wind aren't good for trees that are under stress and must deal with these conditions - or die. Given these conditions, would you grow a weeping blue atlas cedar here? How would they handel an occasional salt water bath from a tropical storm or hurricane? Comments (0)Its a beautiful tree with 8-inch thick trunk and stands about 10-12 feet tall. It grows very vigorously, which is a shame considering it was planted right next to my front door by the previous owners. It needs a new home. If someone wants to come and dig it up, you're welcome to take it home with you. 5 years agoCedars are slow to harden off. I stake with sturdy stakes (rebar works well and is less visible than thicker wooden stakes). This is a weeper, so if you don't stake it, it will flop all over the place. You should decide how high you want it to be, and you'll have to stake to that point. The stake will have to stay on until the final year's new growth hardens, which takes a year or so. Then you can remove it. Ken's point about the wire is a good one; if you only have this one tree to worry about, wire is fine, but if you have a large garden and you start wiring things all over the place, you run the risk of forgetting. I use interlocking plastic tree ties that come in a roll and you can cut off as needed.
Here are two photos of the two C.a. 'GP' over my front door. The first was taken in 2006, the second in 2013 (as you can see, I really do like rebar!) Today, they are fully grown in (I don't have a current photo) and we prune them 1-2 times a year to keep them from taking over the entry.
They are great trees to fool around with and shape as you wish.
