Comments (130)Yes, there needs to be a real focus in this country on the things that support the middle class, and education and training is definitely one of them. Wellness and health care is another, since sick people and people who have big debt from a health crisis (like cancer, for example) have a hard time staying afloat financially. Last but not least, I think community support, institutions that keep kids on a good path, and ways people can share resources like neighborhood playgrounds and libraries, and beaches and boat ramps and hunting preserves and community gardens, and affordable day care, for a few examples, also support the middle class. And quality infrastructure supports economic health, which means good local jobs. But there is almost ZERO emphasis on these issues, just a lot of ho ha about gay marriage, terrorism, sensational crimes, and immigrants and public welfare cheats and poor unborn, theoretical lives. Compared to the problems you will have if you have a loved one with cancer and no health insurance, terrorism is not that big of a problem for you, statistically speaking--the health crisis is way more likely. Not that my sympathies don't go out to the people who suffer as a result of terrorism, but terrorism, like gang and organized crime violence, thrives and breeds in poverty and the erosion of the middle class. If you continue to just treat the symptoms, the disease will not necessarily go away. And I'm no big socialist radical, I think, (as probably do most Americans) that it will take a mix of public and private strategies to support the middle class. But even middle class private support organizations, like the YMCA and many churches, for example, are feeling pinched....See MoreIt's Happened Again! God Hath Cast His Vote!

The council deemed it offensive and asked that it be removed. Instead of taking it down the same artist ( Lushsux) covered the original with a burqa. So, strong political views aren't just here in the U.S....See MoreO/T... best wishes for Tuesday...
Comments (524)There is a lot of passion here. Rightfully so. Rose gardeners are especially passionate people. We attempt to learn, are not afraid to act, and enjoy doing. What I have found, in this antique rose forum, is that I am able to learn from others here, read their perspectives, then take action in my own garden in order to create my own experience. Conversations about roses within this forum are wonderful, but the magic happens in my own yard when I apply what I learned in the conversation. I believe the same can be said for this particular thread. Talking about our different political perspectives is interesting. But the real magic happens through our actions, regardless of where we stand on the left or on the right. This can be something as simple as supporting a news organization that aligns with your own perspective or signing petitions. It can also be more involved and personal, such as volunteering your time and expertise. Regardless of where you stand politically, you can see an area of need within this current political climate and choose fill it. Even being just one person, we can each make a difference. That is obvious within each of our gardens, as we cultivate the soil. We can also cultivate change in other areas of life too. I said this previously, but I volunteer at the VA hospital, at community kitchens, at an elder life program at a local hospital, and also by speaking to youth and women's groups about health and fitness. I do this because I see areas of need within populations of the elderly, veterans, and women and children... areas I have skills and knowledge in. Even though I was a single parent for many years, even though I work, and even though I am going back to school. I find the time because it is important to me... and each time I volunteer I leave feeling as though I have gained more than I could ever give. I also feel as though I am taking actions based on my beliefs and making a real difference. I volunteer side by side with other democrats and republicans with many different political views. But we each saw an area of need and chose to fill it. There is common ground. Regardless of my own political views, regardless of the political climate, regardless of the political choices being made in our country and others, I choose to be the change I personally want to see in the world. I am only one person, but my actions matter. I believe each of yours do too. The people within this forum are absolute do-ers. I completely believe in each of your abilities, because I have seen what you can each do in your gardens... and I personally believe the same life skills from gardening translate over into so many other areas. Action for change can be small. It doesn't have to be something that burdens you. It can be uplifting. Here's a quick article with ideas of different ways you can be politically active. I especially like #18-25. http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/15/politics/ways-to-be-more-politically-active-trnd/...See MoreBe careful what you do recovering from anesthesia!
Comments (12)These stories are hilarious! Many years ago, I had my wisdom teeth removed and periodontal surgery done at the same time. The oral surgeon gave me a valium/demerol intravenous drip and boy what a high that was. I remember thinking that if I'd known it was going to be that good, I would have arranged several appointments to have one tooth at a time removed. After the procedure was over and I woke up, I became really belligerent. One of the employees and my hubby were holding each arm helping me out to the car when I tried to jerk my arms away and started shouting at them both that I didn't need any help and that they weren't to touch me. Never mind that I couldn't walk a straight line unassisted. Once in the car, I made a big scene about not wanting to wear my seatbelt with a loud, profanity laced tirade. Before the surgery, hubby told me that he'd make me a banana milkshake (my favorite) when it was all over and as soon as we arrived home I started demanding the shake. He tried to reason with me that I needed to sleep and let the drugs leave my system and could have the banana shake after I woke up. But, I was having none of that and threw a horrible tantrum including tears and yelling over and over that "you promised!!!" until he agreed to make my milkshake. The last thing I remember is hearing the sounds of the blender from the kitchen. He told me later that he brought me the much demanded banana shake only to find that I had fallen into a deep slumber where I remained for several hours. When I woke up I was myself again and was rather horrified to find out how badly I had behaved. Much as I hate to admit it, I know that it's all true as I have a few vague memories of the above incidents. Fortunately, it's now something we laugh about!...See More- 8 years agolast modified: 8 years ago
