There are a lot out there. Use those marked as HE. Currently I'm using the Costco house brand. You'll probably have to just try something and see how it works for you, so start with small quantities.

Maybe since skin problems are involved try All Free Clear powder or Tide Free Gentle. You know you can use much less than the detergent suggest. I would try 1/8 cup and for heavy soil 1/4 cup. Your water will also determine amounts also. You may need to use less or more. I have soft water so I am used to the lesser amount. There's other detergents for skin problems I just have never tried them, mainly because you have to order them.

So, most modern washers have longer cycle times than older models. They might even have times when they just sit there and hardly do anything.

It took detergent manufacturers a couple of years to get the details right, and it took machine manufacturers a few years too. Some combinations of detergents and washers still don't work. But that's rare. If in doubt, just try a few different brands. It's a cheap experiment, and you should quickly see good results.

As a rule of thumb, liquid detergent is preferable of solid powders. Less likely to leave residue that can cause bad smells or damage your washer. Liquid-filled pods are OK in most cases, too. But it's harder to find fragrance free pods, if that's what you need (see below); and pods often cost more.

The important thing to pay attention to is that you never want your washer to sit around after a cycle when it still has moisture inside. So, always keep the door cracked open a little bit, when you are not using your washer. Some people go to such extremes as wiping down the inside of the washer after each use; but I believe that's overkill. I never had to do that with any of my washers.

If you have sensitive skin, look for a detergent that has no fragrance, avoid fabric softener, and don't use dryer sheets. If that still doesn't help, then switch detergent and/or set the washer to add an extra rinse cycle. And use maximum spin speed.

does anyone know if the henkel made persil megaperls multi is ok for sensitive skin? they have a special sensitive skin version but i am not sure if it is effective

Toploaders Get Moldy

This is an example of what can happen to even an old-style toploader that is used primarily with cold water and liquid detergent at insufficient dosage to keep laundry soils suspended for flushing away.

My nephew and his GF use Tide pods. I helped them move several months ago and took the opportunity to do a bit of disassembly on their toploader for examination/cleaning. I found a layer of orange slimy/gelatinous residue around the tub's drain outlet under the inner drum.

I’d try the Persil Sensitive Megapearls and the Miele powder for sensitive skin.

Liquid detergent for sure builds up and over time causes things to stink. I noticed Asko said just use powder detergent.

I use Persil Power Pearls, which I stockpiled when they were being discontinued in the US, and Perwoll for blacks and dark colors. However, I have very hard well water and find that adding STPP to the Power Pearls for white washes makes a huge difference. Though Asko recommends using powders, the machine has a compartment for liquids. I rinse it out periodically to avoid build-up. (I have the Asko 6424 washer.)

I have been doing some reading, because I thought it to be counter-intuitive that powders leave less residue than liquids. Turns out, as always, things are a lot more complicated than what they seem at first sight.

As a first approximation, powders, liquids and pods are all equally well suited and it is mostly a personal preference question. They have basically the same ingredients. But pods are more expensive and powders and liquids are cheaper.

When you look into more detail, powders can leave residue and can have difficulty dissolving completely, as there inevitably is filler in the product. They also are sensitive to moisture in the air and can cake together.

On the upside, though, powders can include chemicals that can't be put into liquids as these chemicals break down when exposed to moisture. For many consumers, these chemicals don't matter and they might even be unwanted. But if you have hard water, then these chemicals can make quite a difference. That would explain why some people report residue when using liquid detergents without these additives.

In other words, if you have hard water, look for solid detergents and try different brands until you find one that works for your particular model and that doesn't irritate your skin. If you have soft water, don't worry as much. Feel free to pick from widely available liquid detergents and pick the one that is friendliest to your skin.

hard water my new asko does not have a liquid detergent reservoir i don't think
