Fruit & veggies just getting moldy
Comments (20)I'd put some shredded paper, leaves, or cardboard in with every bucket of kitchen waste that is added to the cold container. When it thaws in the spring, the browns will really help give carbon energy to all the organisms and help the composting process. Easier to add browns now as you go along than trying to mix it in the block of frozen kitchen scraps in the spring. Mold is okay in compost, but too heavy nitrogen/green ratio and you will get slime/mucky/odor with the thaw. Of course that can be corrected later with adding browns, but adding browns through the winter will help prevent that....See Morejade cuttings getting moldy in gritty mix
Comments (58)Hi, guys. Shannon left a link to this thread, so I came & read through it. This is a picture of the soil most often referred to as the gritty mix. You can see by the particle size that it has tremendous macro-porosity. It's made from equal parts by volume of 1/8-1/4" fir (or pine) bark, screened Turface (hi-fired clay granules), and crushed granite (grower grit - about 1/8" pieces). You can vary the water retention of this soil by keeping the bark component at 1/3 while varying the % of Turface and granite. E.g.. a mix of 3 bark 4 Turface 2 granite would hold considerably more water than 3 bark 4 granite 2 Turface You can also simply add more Turface or granite which has the effect of reducing the organic component. I've started hundreds of different cuttings, many succulents, in this soil, and never had damping off issues, so I would bet that Kashu's issues are other cultural or inherent in the plant. I suggested a sulfur dusting of the cut end and sticking the plant in dry soil for at least a week w/o water, after at least 2 weeks callusing time. Take care - just wanted to say hey. Comments (7)Steve - Winter sowing worked with my other salvia seeds last year but not with guaranitica. I wasn't able to harvest a lot of seeds though. I WAS winter sowing my darcyi seeds this year but we've had a lot of rainfall and I brought them in so they wouldn't wash away. I found the info on Byron's famous tea. I've used chamomile tea before for seedlings but don't have any now. It wasn't clear whether regular tea helps as much with damping off and mold. I could see some more sprouts this morning and they look ok but I'm afraid to leave the lid off the whole time. I don't want them to dry out. I'd like to put them back outside now that the rain has stopped but they were inside for a few days so I don't know if that's going to work. I'll have to acclimate them slowly just in case. I have some 'Cerro Potosi' seeds that are starting to sprout too. : )...See Morewhat detergent for new asko washer
Comments (13)I have been doing some reading, because I thought it to be counter-intuitive that powders leave less residue than liquids. Turns out, as always, things are a lot more complicated than what they seem at first sight. As a first approximation, powders, liquids and pods are all equally well suited and it is mostly a personal preference question. They have basically the same ingredients. But pods are more expensive and powders and liquids are cheaper. When you look into more detail, powders can leave residue and can have difficulty dissolving completely, as there inevitably is filler in the product. They also are sensitive to moisture in the air and can cake together. On the upside, though, powders can include chemicals that can't be put into liquids as these chemicals break down when exposed to moisture. For many consumers, these chemicals don't matter and they might even be unwanted. But if you have hard water, then these chemicals can make quite a difference. That would explain why some people report residue when using liquid detergents without these additives. In other words, if you have hard water, look for solid detergents and try different brands until you find one that works for your particular model and that doesn't irritate your skin. If you have soft water, don't worry as much. Feel free to pick from widely available liquid detergents and pick the one that is friendliest to your skin....See Moredianne47
