10 Tips for Making Your Laundry Room Better
I always wanted to have a laundry room. As a kid, we had our washer and dryer tucked into a hallway closet. In my first house, the washer and dryer were actually located outside (what a pain!) And these days I live in an apartment with a shared laundry space (blech). Someday, I'm going to have a laundry room and I plan to give the space the decorating attention it deserves!
I think it's unfortunate that so many people ignore the design of their laundry rooms and storage rooms. It's as though these spaces are an afterthought even though the laundry room is a room we use all of the time. Decorating it to be more efficient, more comfortable and more appealing to the eye seems to make perfect sense to me.
I think creating the right laundry room starts with efficiency. The right appliances, the right surface spaces and plenty of storage are important here. However, so is the right mood. Laundry rooms should have pretty colors and interesting design touches. Don't you think so?

Choose an interesting color palette for the room. You don't expect to walk into a laundry room and see bright blue, do you? It makes the room welcoming and wonderful instead of just a place to do the work of the house.
Add a desk or reading area. If you have room to add a little nook for yourself into the laundry room then it can be a great little getaway from the rest of the house. The soothing sounds of the washing machine and the fact that no one else wants to come in this room make it ideal for your daily escape!
Add a folding table. If there is space in your laundry room for a table where you can fold and sort clothes then by all means do it here!
Add racks. I love the idea of having a hanging rack like the one that is seen on the wall of this laundry room. I also love the rack that hands on the door and keeps all of your different soaps and detergents organized.
Add cute touches. Many people just ignore the decor of their laundry room. Just a few little touches - like the lamp and the signage we see here - can really personalize the space.
Install an old washtub. If you have a lot of clothing that you wash by hand or that needs to soak before washing then it's worth it to add a large sink or old washtub to your laundry space. No more washing the clothes in the family shower!
Go vintage. I love the vintage touches in the design here - the washboard, the old signs. Washing laundry is one of the ancient domestic arts and this vintage nod celebrates that.
Make sure that there is plenty of shelf space. It's so much easier to keep a laundry room organized and efficient if you have enough shelf space to do so.
Make the walls more interesting. This mosaic tile art in the laundry room is fascinating! Wallpaper or even just a new layer of paint can make your laundry room pop.
Choose the right appliances. What type of washer and dryer would you have if you could choose any model? It's worth it to invest in the right appliances so doing the chore of laundry becomes less of a hassle and more of a joy.
