Santa Cruz Island Ironwood as an espalier/hedge

I'm considering using a row of Santa Cruz Island Ironwood plants as a hedge between a neighbor, and controlling its shape and height as a espalier onto a wired trellis. Any comments or experience with growing this type of tree in this manner will be appreciated. The specific questions I have are:
1. It will be next to a driveway, so I'm concerned of roots lifting the concrete pavement. Anyone have any experience with this?
2. Can its height be controlled by routinely trimming this tree as a hedge, and training as an espalier?
