Kona Sharwil
Comments (1)Excuse me upfront for being a bit of a stickler, but as you move forward with your search it might be helpful to focus on "Sharwil", as Kona Sharwil appears to be a name that someone came up with for commercial purposes. I've linked a thread below from a post in the California forum with a couple of vendor recommendations. Here is a link that might be useful: Sharwil avocado vendors?...See MoreSharwil avocado vendors?
Comments (18)Consider a Sir Prize. Chat with Chris at Growquest, he really likes Sir Prize. That would be my B option (and actually IS my B option :-) ). There is some thought that Sir Prize can withstand some lower temps, but I think that may be in dispute. Do you have avocados growing nearby you, especially a commercial grove? If so, no need to worry about getting a B avocado. If you don't, then it can help with fruit set. And, Growquest can give you some easy suggestions for frost protection. If your trees are little, then all you need is a bedsheet hung all the way to the ground with some bricks or rocks to hold it to the ground. Larger, established trees will probably do fine in your area. We get a handful of nights at 32, too, and had at least one or two nights like that already, and my Haas is just fine. It's probably 2 or 3 years old, now, and about 10 feet tall, and FINALLY looking like it's going to fruit. The previous owners neglected it near to death. I was able to salvage it with a lot of water, organic fertilizer and more light. Patty S....See MoreBest Place to Buy Avocados: Clausen in Vista
Comments (12)Yeah that's the thing, the soil was free draining and was potted in basically sand but still had root rot. LIke I said, I don't know if I somehow transferred it to the Avos or I got 1 bad Avo from Atkins and transferred it that way. I don't think both were infested. Yeah, with decomposed granite, it's pretty much hard to kill anything as water drips right off. However, if you get root rot, you'll be sure no matter how free flowing it is, it'll start to chew up your roots. Agri-fos doesn't eradicate root rot just makes the roots less susceptible w/ stronger defenses. If your soil is contaminated or was contaminated, Agri-fos will help your Avos recover but remember when you stop using it 2 or 3 years, you'll be back in the same position as you were before Agri-fos. Phytophthora cinnamomi can be dormant for 7 years, survives at different oxygenated soil levels, ranges of temperatures and can actually move in water (with a tail!). Rather than deal with that again and waste more money, I'm just getting a commercial rootstock plus I'll make sure I'm giving it it agri-fos once twice a year for good measure. Let me know if you guys want any variety on a certain rootstock as I'll be getting my shipment late July. It'll be expensive but worth it (at least for me). I was thinking maybe I should start selling avocados w/ resistant rootstock in orange county if there was enough demand but I don't think there is....See MoreNew to avocados
Comments (3)I hope someone with more experience is able to answer your question. Those leaves don't look healthy to me. Yellow leaves usually mean too much water or not enough drainage... but I'm not sure about the brown dot patterns on the leaves. Also... is the grass surrounding the tree cleared about 3 feet around the tree... or was the tree planted in the turf?...See Moresautesmom Sacramento
