Design Dilemma dining room

Crown molding in dining room of open layout house??

I thought I would put crown molding in my dining room to help define the space and make it a little more elegant. However the dining room is separated from the hallway/stairwell by 2 half walls (with pillars) and I wasn't sure if the molding would help the space or look tacky as it seems I would only be able to put it around the 3 full walls?alternatively is there any other trim that I could put in the room to add to it without spending too much money(trying to be economical!)

If you're putting in crown molding, it should go everywhere. Having it only in a few spots, especially in an open concept home, just makes it look unfinished IMO. You can easily make a dining room look elegant with furnishings and accessories.

Has the dining room framing been completed yet?

From the plans it looks like there will be a dropped beam across the large opening.

If this is correct, you could wrap the crown molding around the entire dining room ceiling and it would be contained within the dining room..........

I don't see a problem in having crown molding in the dining room without putting it elsewhere in the house......but keep it simple.........

What I would do if it were my kitchen: 1. move the DOvens to the R of cooktop 2. make that sink area to the L of fridge = clean up zone: - make sink bigger, and - put the DW to the L of the sink 3. Move island sink toward the R (closer to patio): I like to come in from patio to wash my hands after being in the garden, etc. - So now island/cooktop = prep/cook area, clear path to fridge, w/out the rare use of Oven in the way 4. Clean up/putting away clean dishes has its own zone So much potential; great space. Make it awesome! Amanda

I am in the middle of a whole house reno. I wanted to paint the kitchen cabinets and the attached crown gray, but the kitchen opens to the living room, which will have white box paneling and also white crown like the rest of the house. There is a corner where the two rooms meet (a recessed bar niche between the living/kitchen. I don't love the idea of two colors of painted crown meeting up, is there a good way to do this? Or does anyone have a picture of a similar situation? I have seen stained cabs/meeting with painted and that looks ok but two different paints seems like a bad idea. I can't seem to find any photos of this situation. Kitchen is the the right, bar niche to the left with the pretty white pipe running through it, living to the far left. (Dining is through the cased opening with window) My current thought is to do the bar area cab/crown white and extend the white over the tiny bit of wall between that and the kitchen. Then the gray kitchen cabs would start on that wall to the left of the wires. Thank you!

I will look to see if I have a floor plan, but if not, how would i go about creating one for you. I know I sound like an idiot but obviously I am clueless as to this kind of stuff and wish my husband would just let me hire a decorator lol! However, he just now gave me another big fat NO to hiring one lol! So needless to say, I am going to have to learn how to do this on my own and asking for help, however annoying I may be, is the only thing I know to do! So I apologize in advance for my ignorance! THANKS FOR THE PHOTOS, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND A BIG AREA RUG IN THE CENTER BECAUSE IT WILL UNBALANCE THE DINING CHAIRS EVERY TIME YOU USE. YOU CAN ADD A RUG UNDER THE CHAIRS IF YOU HAVE ENOUGH SPACE A FOOT REST WOULD BE NICE IN FRONT OF IT. SOME INSPIRATIONAL PHOTOS MIGHT HELP

the dining room framing has not been completed and you are correct I just noticed that there is a beam is in the plans...so I think I will go for it..is there a specific crown molding you would recommend?

Hi Ahuva, what style is the home's interior/exterior? (It appears to be traditional or craftsman...I like the layout.) I'd look up a few styles on Houzz and give special notice to the mouldings used--see which one you think might look good in the space.
