The "B" dress: latest report on wedding dress shopping.

I'm not trying to hog the board, really I'm not! I just know I like it when folks follow up a query with how it all turned out IRL. I totally understand if the result is: "I got the flu and went with a store bought cake to grandma's birthday party." or "The car died and we had to skip getting new kitchen counters." So in that vein, here is my progress on my wedding dress. I found something that "will do." It's like a "B" wedding dress. And as I tell my students, "B" means "Good!" It's going to allow me to spend more time on some other things besides perusing online stores, packing and unpacking dresses and trip$ to the post office to send them back. I've probably tried on a dozen things so far. AND, if the "A" dress comes along, I can still go with it because this "B" one is very inexpensive. In fact, if I had waited a while I could have gotten it for 40 bucks!

So here's the dress. It's a little large because I had to order it in a size 14 instead of my size 12, but both SO and I think it doesn't scream "too big" on me. I can also have it tailored and altered. It checks a lot of my boxes--it's got color, it's lacy and flouncy enough to say "boho wedding" but it's not so out-there that it will embarrass me ten years later, and being a short dress it highlights my legs which are one of my better features. The lacy outer covering has holes for ventilation. If it is chilly I have a fringey white shawl I can wear. And I have two pairs of dress shoes already I can wear with it plus an heirloom ivory necklace that was my mom's, and a pair of her earrings. The downside is it is polyester, and I have been wearing a couple of other poly dresses, and even the sleeveless ones make me hot because they don't breathe up around my upper body. But I think the church or at least the reception room is air conditioned so I don't think I will have to worry. I'm also toying with ripping out the poly shift part underneath the lace and pairing it with a cotton slip dress if I can find one. Note: it is not as short on me as it is on the model.

LOL Oly, I try to tell my students there is a fine line between "good" and "excellent." An "A" according to my grading rubric, would be something in cotton, maybe a tad longer and more unique. But also as I tell my students, most of the time if we can go through life doing "B" work we are doing very well. Don't sweat the small stuff. Meanwhile, I can get on with the rest of the tasks and enjoying my summer and stop spending time online, with the tape dispenser and at the post office. I'd rather hire someone who does B work consistently than A work occasionally and the rest of the time is in the sanitarium or the rehab center. But that's just me, for me, being a perfectionist, the perfect is the enemy of the good. Besides, SO is perfect and that's what really counts! ;)

Thanks for finding the butterfly dress Cindy! Funky, maybe you saw the dress from Anthro? It’s kind of similar? Yeah, I’m kind of thinking I need to wait to pull the trigger until I see some new spring dresses. Amy, that mod cloth dress is so pretty, but a little too short for my liking. Jill, that’s kind of what I want - something that’s a hint of dressy but can be worn casually as well. dyh - UO is tough! Very young and very skinny girl dresses! I wish! I don’t know how I missed the Anthro dresses. The beaded wrap and the butterfly are perfect! I think the tulips are just too big of a print and too busy for anything but a waif. This navy dress at Nordstrom Rack is nice (and cheap). I live in Florida and would wear this on cooler days/evenings here December-January. This might also work up north for a wedding. It's lined. I like the neckline. Add a long necklace with pendant or dainty choker. Don't know your size. The smaller sizes are sold out. Starts at 10. None of the dresses wow me, and it is silly to change 3 times for one wedding! Did any of you ever watch "Say Yes to the Dress?" Some of the dresses on that show could best be described as "Fairy Princess Stripper" dresses. In my mind, black is for a more formal wedding. I like that first dress you show but I don't think the next one looks too small, in fact I think it shows your waist off more. Unless it pulls across the hips and it doesn't appear to. So I might order it in a smaller size. But, depending on time of day and what color the wedding party will wear, I'm still on the fence. For a spring wedding I am seeing a pretty color instead of black. I also think as we get older, black can be a bit harsh against the face. Hmmm strappy silver shoes would look good with that dress though!! Do you know when other son's wedding is (month?)

I think it's a very sweet dress and I don't mean that in the 'too cutesy' kind of way. It's soft and feminine and just reminiscent enough of the hippie/boho era you are drawn to.

Seriously, it doesn't look like a B dress to me. It's very pretty, feminine but classy, simple but not boring. And it will go great with your venue.

The dress is absolutely beautiful! I would wear it in a heartbeat. You do realize how many virtual GW bridesmaids you have, don’t you? I think the number is pretty close to 228!

I am very finicky and if I didn't like something I'd stay quiet.

I love that dress, and I think it is perfect for the event you described, the parameters you want to feel comfy and look your best, and the price is crazy.

I would totally believe it if it were on Saks.com for $500. It is unusual and special but not "out there". Feminine but not silly. A nod to white and floral but not too much of either. Perfect.

As far as hogging the boards? I have hogged the board for any manner of stupid stuff that flits through my head. Getting married def conveys hogging rights!!

What I like above this one over some of the A dresses that were being considered is that YOU wear the dress, this dress isn't wearing you.

Good old JCPenneys! When I'm looking for simple, classic styles, I always have good luck there - and they're usually on sale too = )

Some of the higher-end dresses were still polyester, so when I started looking at the less costly ones at Penny's, the differences were minimal. A lot of misses from Penny's too, but so far, three positive hits! I still may explore a cotton option, but right now I have to get my guest list finished!!!

Oh, and the floral print features tulips among the mix, a nod to mom's and my Dutch heritage! I was afraid it would end up being "too cutesy" and make me look like I was trying to hard too look young, but I think Graywings nailed why I can settle on it, it's flexible and easy to wear and it blends for my body type but still says "wedding."

I have been following your wedding adventure and just want to say I love that dress! Of course we don’t personally “know” you, but based on your on-line personality, it looks like You :)

I don’t wear dresses often, but recently have felt the need to dress shop. You have sent me down the rabbit hole after viewing your dress....there are several shown on the same viewing page under “You May Also Like” category that caught my eye. I have a difficult time finding spring and summer dresses that I like that are not sleeveless....Love 3/4 sleeves for spring, summer and fall. I like the paisley puff dress show on the same page. Thanks for giving me a motivation to dress shop...lol.

i do prefer cotton also, but I can tolerate polyester for those one to two hour special occasions......when the price is way less than $50.00.

One quick question....it has some spandex...is it clingy stretchy or does it hang slightly loose (in the right size of course)..

The nice thing is all of the 228 bridesmaids can pick a color out of your dress for themselves and we’ll look like a beautiful garden together.

The dress is cute but not cutesy. Great choice.
