We start to see heirloom tomatoes in the stores around this time and they are usually delicious.

I've seen locally grown produce in chain stores before.

I usually buy the little cherry tomatoes in the cartons. My cherry tomato plant is currently producing. I'm freezing those for the big payoff of tomato basil soup later this summer.

Our Walmart here has only started selling produce. I have been pleasantly surprised with the quality they have. My only complaint is the organization. They don’t seem to stock stuff the same way as the other stores. For instance, flat breads are in 3 different places.

Same as Annie, we buy the Campari’s all year and they are surprisingly flavorful and have a good shelf life. I sometimes buy the cherry tomatoes in mixed colors. Makes a great salad tossed with a vinaigrette and any other herbs you want to add.

I love the Camparis, heirlooms, and the home grown from the farmers market. Sadly, can't eat tomatoes anymore because of potassium levels.

I've not noticed campaign tomatoes, but Cherub grape tomatoes are consistently delicious. I like buying organic tomatoes, but the Cherubs are often tastier.

Sam's club and Wegmans both have had cherry tomatoes called Flavor Bombs ...and they are.

I quit buying store tomatoes a long time ago. If a recipe calls for them and I can't get them from my garden, I use canned. I started a Sun Basket meal plan last week and in one of the meals they sent me the worst tomatoes I've ever had. One was just starting to ripen, the other was mostly white and hard as a rock. I threw it out and sent them a message. Did they really think that would be ok?

Ok, Adellabedella, you can't get away with mentioning that you make a delicious tomato basil soup and not post the recipe! Those are 2 of my absolute favorite things. Would you kindly share your recipe or technique, please?

Lucille, I think those are the same ones I bought from HEB. I am out now and have thrown away the carton. Or maybe not. The ones I got were small like cherry tomatoes. Expensive but none went to waste. All I have right now are Roma and they are pretty bad in salads. I usually buy some kind of slicing tomato for hamburgers but last time I was at HEB, they didn't have the ones I usually buy. What they had was smaller and a little cheaper, but not as good. I went to another HEB and they didn't have them either. Probably discontinued them. It figures....I like something and they stop carrying it. Going to ask them next time I go.

I have tried to like cherry or grape tomatoes but for the most part I find this skin to meat ratio to be unbalanced. Too much skin. I love the look of them and do use them for some purpose but I prefer a metier type.

The Cherub grape tomatoes that lisaam mentioned have been consistently good for me too, it doesn't seem to matter which store they come from. There is another variety that is sold the same way (in a little bubble carton) and they are also very good.

I've had pretty good success with tomatoes on the vine tasting almost as good as home grown- but it really depends on how well the store takes care of them. A few of our stores seem to take good care of the toms, making sure they don't drop below the critical temperature and so forth.

I bought a few romas this week and last because they were the only thing inexpensive and looked good enough. Romas are notoriously tasteless, and these leave a little to be desired, but are surprisingly good for the price. They work as thin slices on a sandwich, or little chunks in the bean salad. :^)

I've never found even close to reasonable produce at Walmart. Every store, every time the stuff is old, wilted and rotting. I can't believe anyone buys that. I assume they just have a lousy source for produce in this area. Probably are shipping it in from the south and it rots on the trucks is my only guess.

organic tomatoes? During the off season, tomatoes are grown in a controlled climate, usually hydroponics, enclosed houses, disease and insect free. No need to waste $ on an organic label since it's grown right next to the non-organic.

Just about every produce grown on the west coast, harvested and shipped to Ohio is poor quality and past the sell date. Pulled and picked vegetables begin declining immediately after harvested. I've experienced better produce from Mexico than California.

Suzieque - I have made this recipe once using canned tomatoes. Rich and Creamy Tomato Basil Soup I like to read the comments and incorporate those. Dh and the kids said they want more cream and butter next time so I will add those to where it will probably give us a heart attack. I also have basil growing in my yard. I may go above and beyond with that.

I get the bakery loaves of French bread from Walmart. Sometimes they are pre-sliced. There is a garlic flavor one and another all seasoning one I usually buy. Those aren't the exact names, but they have some flavor sprinkles on top of the crust. I used that bread to make grilled cheese sandwiches. I usually use sharp cheddar. It pairs well with the soup.

None of this healthy at this point, but it is delicious.
