How adorable! Even though deer are not my favorites right now. They ate most of my very impressive hollyhock last night. Checked on it today because it was about to flower. Seeing this little baby helped. Thanks!

The deer nipped off all my tulip buds and have about killed my roses. Its to the garden center to get marigolds. The deer (and rabbits) leave these alone. I'll spray my hydrangeas with repellent when they form flower buds. The deer will nip these off too.

I would sacrifice some plants for that little cuteness!!! Wow!!!

Our does are heavily pregnant and I expect to start seeing babies next week. They usually start giving birth the first week of June through early August.

A couple of years ago, I had a very similar situation to yours, jemdandy. A doe hid her baby behind a large boulder that is next to our front door. I was going to go to town that day, but my car was parked near the front door and I didn't want to scare the little thing by going out and starting my car. I ended up postponing my trip into town until the following day.

That is a special surprise for you. A doe placed her fawn in the exact same location up against the wall at the back of the middle school last year and the year before. We wonder if there will be a repeat performance this year.

Around here, in central NJ, the police and others have been posting advice that these fawns on lawns (as we say) are not abandoned and to leave them be--their mamas will be back shortly.:) they are so sweet

That's awfully cute. I had a pregnant doe sleeping here most of yesterday but I've never had one leave a fawn for me to watch. The former owner of this house told me she had one left outside the floor to ceiling living room windows one year - claimed by the mom later in the day.

So sweet! We had one in the wide open space between the woods and the road in front of our house. Just in the grass, barely visible. DH would have missed seeing it if he hadn’t been on the tractor. He came back and got me and I got a photo. We went back to look about a half hour later and it was gone. Mama had come back for her baby. Hope yours is gone now too.

Yes, please keep us posted! I want to know if it stays there for more than a day. Maybe the mama just left for a few hours, though! Adorable. I love deer. We used to have some in our woods back when we lived in Ohio. We could never get very close though!

I didn't think deer were nocturnal. Shouldn't mother be close by and already fetch the youngster?

Sorry but I forgot...at this age he's probably completely reliant on mom for food and fluids so probably still gets its water from moms milk. Wonder how long he can go without fluids. Rhizo will know so maybe she will pop in.

mamaP, they are out and about at all times of the day and night, but seem to be most active in the mornings and around the time the sun goes down and well into dark. They are one of the reasons I hate driving at night.

I've never seen such a youngster. It would be at peril from our coyotes and eagles. We have deer but our garden walls do a good job keeping our plants safe (although someone decimated half of my pachysandra outside of the walled garden. The roots are still in the ground and I think the plants will rejuvenate. I suspect deer, not rabbits, by the pattern of destruction.

The mother is nearby.

I had a fawn behind my garden. No way was I letting it stay and eat everything. I chased it away. The mom was nearby, got her kid, and parked it somewhere else. Garden saved. Mom and baby were fine.

We went out to dinner and got back by 8pm. The fawn was still parked by the house and seemed in good shape. Sometime between 8 and 11pm, the fawn disappeared. He was not around the house nor nearby. I did find another place where he may have bedded for awhile. Mother deer must have moved him. There are plenty of places to hide a fawn near our property. It will the last we see of him until he runs with Mom.

Earlier, my wife had called the animal rehab center for advice (in case something had happened to its Mother). They do not take deer willingly. They don't have the facility to foster a fawn to adulthood nor the means to teach the deer to act like a wild deer. When one is brought in, they poll their contacts to see if someone will adopt him, and if not, he is euthanized. Deer are not endangered around here. Many are smashed at night on the fronts of vehicles at the expense of the vehicle owner. Personal injury has resulted in a few cases.

The Animal Center said that a fawn can easily go 12 hrs between feedings. They said to keep watch on him and if he began to call for his mother, stir around, and seem distressed to call again.

How sweet is this? You're so lucky to have this little guy in your yard. Keep us posted on his journey.

When my husband cut hay he had to really watch for fawns hidden in the hayfield as they would not move. He managed to save quite a few but not all of them. I don't know how he was able to see them with the hay being tall, but he did.
