Hallway (2nd floor) lighting: recessed lighting or flush mount?

We need to replace some dated (and not very effective) lighting in a second floor hallway. Debating between some LED recessed lights simple flush mounts or a combo.

Home is a colonial style from the 1920s high ceilings but most of the 2nd floor hallway feels very dark (large window near the staircase, but once passed no natural light except what might come from adjacent bedrooms).

Thinking that we might do one fixture at the top of the landing and then a series of simple pieces like this:

OR should we just keep it clean and do recessed lights?

Thanks
