Roses that you wish you had NOT bought at all
Comments (52)I have no roses that I regret acquiring, but I do have roses that I regret putting where I did. Everything seems to grow larger than expected here, and it took me some time to learn that. I now have monster roses that really need to be relocated. Crepuscule finally got a haircut of about half her growth in January. I hope she doesn't get too pissy with me. She loves her location just a bit too much. Alberic Barbier has canes that end up about 15 feet beyond the plant on the ground UNDER THE FALLEN OAK LEAVES. Ouch !!! I do a fair amount of barefoot gardening. And finally, Silver Moon (aka The Kraken) is going to smother Ghislaine de Feligonde (not exactly a small rose herself). I just had to trim Ghislaine from a pathway. These monsters need to be shuffled around and I am not looking forward to it. The Kraken is staying put - I am not dealing with those fish hooks. It almost ate me when I tried to "scratch in" some fertilizer. Wow, she gets thrown some 10-10-10 from now on. It's funny, though. These are all great roses and have won their places in my garden. I just didn't leave them near enough room and now I have to try to move giant briar patches. Gardening is definitely about location....See MoreEverything is late this year!
Comments (11)We are having an unusually mild autumn, too, very much like Cath's and we are just as surprised. This is a list of roses now in bloom in a garden by the sea in northern Finland, far north of me (it's from a Swedish forum): Sibelius, Marie-Jeanne, White Wings, Mozart, Rosenstadt Freisinger, Sweet Pretty, Stanwell Perpetual, Poustina, Edith Holden, Praire Princess, Thisbe, Brown Velvet, Hot Chocolate, F.J Grootendorst, Therese Bugnet, Felix Leclerk, Ballerina, Roselina, Flamingo, Blushing Bride, Breewood Belle, Margot Koster, Candy Cover, Viking, White Cover, Queens Palace, Charming Cover, Sophies Perpetual, Jacqueline de Pre, Nevada, 2x Lidlrosor (en vit, en aprikos), Mme Boll, Balder, My Hero, White New Dawn, Angela, Summer Song, Benjamin Britten, Lilli Marleen,Cinderella, Romanze, Lumivalgeke, Marie Victorin, Nostalgie, Kotiliesi, Single Cherry, Charles Albanel, Joasine Hanet, William Baffin, Sniedze, Dainty Bess, Queen of Sweden, Burgundy Iceberg, Old Gold, Perennial Blue, Delambre, Strawberry Hill, Rosemoor, Dwarf Pavement, Kiiminki, Lady Emma Hamilton, Whiskey Mac, Pomponella, Heide Simonis, Zaiga, Margaret Merrill, Vino, A Shopshire Lad, Walz Time, Greensleeves, Kronborg, Sangerhausen Jubileumsrose. This is an amazing list, both the choice of roses in that cold climate and the fact that they bloom this late. I have few in bloom now, only Stanwell Perpetual, Karen Blixen, Alba Meidiland, Iceberg and Bonica. Some more have buds and if this warm weather lasts another week they may still flower. I have finished gardening in principle and I'm mentally prepared for winter. I only need to rake leaves in parts of the garden and mulch beds with them....See MoreBest reds for repeating
Comments (2)Thanks organicmickie. I went ahead with Mme Julia because I found it locally, but that Margo Koster looks beautiful too. Even though it appears a little more pink, I can think of a lot of places that could fit in my garden. Thank you, Barb...See MoreHarlow Carr, Cezanne, Bourbon and why not???
Comments (42)It would be nice to "support" my local nursery when it comes to Clematis..but around here..I can't hardly find any...Lowe's, Walmart have those itty bitty orange pots of them from Roseville..I've had success with those but they don't even compare to the Ones I've bought from Dan,Debbie,Murray or Chad..I would rather pay $16.00+ for a well rooted clematis from any of them for something I really really just gotta have!!..It's really strange when I go to the nurseries for they call me the clematis lady..from all the times I've asked if they have any or when will they get some or can I talk to the manager to ask if they'll add them to their inventory..I was SO SHOCKED this year...I saw Lowe's had ONE-GALLON clematis but to my dismay..they were one's I had...I did pay 10bucks for a one-gallon "Snow Queen" that my climbing rosa "Don Juan" asked me to pick up for him..I think they shall be divine together!!...Jeanne...See MoreVaporvac Z6-OhioRiverValley
