Comments (8)If you have any other broadband available to you, ie: DSL, cable, or FiOS, go with one of them. I just switched to the aircard because I was using satellite and it was just a little better than dialup. The aircard is usually faster unless you are on the 1XX(voice) service. Then it may not be any faster than dialup. So a lot depends on where you are located and where you are in relation to a tower. The aircards are primarily designed for business travelers who need broadband service "on the road". But many of us in areas where we have no other choices are beginning to use this service at home. Of course, the more crowded the service becomes, the slower the service becomes. I notice a slowdown during the evening hours where I live, but that happened with satellite, too. For e-mail, surfing, some streaming music and UTube, the 5GB limit should be okay, but as I stated before, lots of videos, movies, etc. will use up your alloted bandwidth in a hurry. There is lots of information available, so use your friend Google....See Morekeeping old e-mail adress
Comments (8)But I did not mind it until it needed to get someone out here to work on it.You need a translator to talk with them on the phone and you get the run around. It sounds like Hughesnet must have customer service (???) farmed out to somewhere overseas. Back when I had WB (about 12 days before cancelling it), I had several outages and it was always an hour or more on hold to get in touch with a tech. After one storm, a tech told me I would not have service again until the sky was clear...as in a clear blue sky, as opposed to being cloudy and overcast...sheesh. The last time I talked to Wild Blue repair (before cancelling it) I was told it would be 10 days to get someone out here to look at my 12 day old equipment. In the meantime, I had no service at all. I said I wasn't gonna rant, but just can't help how badly they upset me. I really never expected WB to be all that fast. I would have just been pleased if it worked at all. I, like you, had phone line 'issues' and was told that they (the Phone Co) was only responsible for providing 'talk quality' service. Sue...See Moredo you know of a good internet provider for
Comments (8)I am in a rural area also where phone lines are very slow; there is no DSL or cable, so for a long time the only thing available was satellite. I currently have Wild Blue. One neighbor has Hughes Net. These are the two main providers. Neither is true broad band, but both are better than dialup. Each has a limit on usage, depending on the service you subscribe to, but those limits are figured differently, so study carefully before you make a decision. I now have cellular broadband available through Verizon which is faster than satellite, but it costs more and usage is even more limited, so I'm sticking with satellite until either DSL or some wireless ISP comes my way. You will hear horror stories about all of these, and others are very satisfied with their service. Much depends on the knowledge of your installer. Still, I wouldn't give up my rural lifestyle for all the broadband services....See MoreAdded Value for Standby Generator?
Comments (40)Interesting thread. Lots of people got generators after the 1998 Ice Storm, but without being maintained, most were useless after a couple of years. I don't know about the bigger ones being discussed in this thread. Many city homes (ours included) have a gas fireplace, so that would handle the heat issue of being without electric power. And we have several power boxes that can be used off-grid that are handle for short power failures (to plug in some lights). I wouldn't bother with a generator, myself. During the big power failure in August (2004?), we just did without power for a day, but a few people in our urban neighbourhood had generators - it just made the rest of us irritated, because they ran their AC and had all their lights on, and made a racket. Not impressed....See MoreElmer J Fudd
