IF you have no options through telephone for DSL or through cable for high speed about the only other option would be through satellite, direct tv offers a high speed option. My sister is in a very rural area in Louisiana and has gone with the direct tv option, she was using connections through her cell network but it was hit or miss, you could check that out also if there are cell towers in your area, can you get cell phone reception? if so that may be a possibility.

DSL is the way to go, check with your phone provider, they should offer it? mine is with Embarq, our phone co.

I am in a rural area also where phone lines are very slow; there is no DSL or cable, so for a long time the only thing available was satellite. I currently have Wild Blue. One neighbor has Hughes Net. These are the two main providers. Neither is true broad band, but both are better than dialup. Each has a limit on usage, depending on the service you subscribe to, but those limits are figured differently, so study carefully before you make a decision. I now have cellular broadband available through Verizon which is faster than satellite, but it costs more and usage is even more limited, so I'm sticking with satellite until either DSL or some wireless ISP comes my way. You will hear horror stories about all of these, and others are very satisfied with their service. Much depends on the knowledge of your installer. Still, I wouldn't give up my rural lifestyle for all the broadband services.

I think your best options are satellite or cable. Cable would be fastest and most reliable, but satellite may be acceptable, as long as you have no need for VPN.

You may want to check with a cell phone provider to see if EVDO is available in your area. If it is, you should be able to get a USB device to use it. EVDO may be available even where cell coverage is not reliable.

I think I'd be talking to the phone company to see if they have plans for DSL upgrade for your area. From your post, I assume cable is not an option anytime in the foreseeable future. Also see some of the responses to "patches_02" post "internet connection?" about satellite services. They do have their limits.

usually the problem with DSL in rural areas is the distance from the CO. DSL will only work if you are within a certain distance from the nearest CO if you fall off that range your not likely to be able to get it, and it is not really worth it for the phone company to do all the work to get to just a few rural customers.
Unfortunately that pretty much leaves the satellite choices or cell if you happen to be lucky enough to have a cell tower around.
