What size pendants should I use over a 7' 6" island?

The ceiling is 10". The island is 49" long and 7' 6" wide. I'm thinking about two globe pendants but I'm not sure which size to get - is 20" too large? Is 13" too small?

There is a formula it goes something like this:
- Measure the length of your island/table in inches. Example: 60" wide
- Determine how many pendants you want and the diameter of each. Add them up for a combined diameter. Example: 3 pendants with an 8" diameter. Combined = 24"
- Subtract the combined diameter from the length of the island.
- Example: 60" - 24"= 36"
- Add 1 to the number of pendants. (This accounts for the space between each pendant and the ends of the island) Example: Since its 3 pendants, this number will be 4.
- Divide your subtracted value by the number of pendants.
- Example: 36" ÷ 4 = 9". You’ll want about 9" of space in between each pendant.

Two 20 inch pendants will feel huge and be crowded. You have 90 inches. Allowing spacing and a foot in from either end? 64 inches are used up. That means you will have 90 minus 64 and only 26 inches of air between them.

Use the thirteen : ) And do two. Here is 12" over 96", set 18 in from each end

Our new kitchen will have a 7.6' island (including overhang) and 9' ceilings in an open floor plan, closely resembling the layout pictured below (built from the same floor plan) but white with cabinetry extended several feet along the back wall. Generally speaking, you get a circle of concentrated light directly below a fixture that is about four feet in diameter, and the light slowly dissipates from there. To that end, going with two pendants ought to suit the needs of the island, though you might consider a third to illuminate the important walkways. The dimensions of the fixtures largely depend on how you intend to use the island. Are we just preparing food on here, or are we also sitting and eating here? If you're going to be doing any sitting, fixtures nearly two feet in height might be a bit much. Something in the neighborhood of 16 inches should work well. If you're open to suggestions, we have a huge variety of fixtures for settings just like this. I'm personally partial to our Lighthouse ceiling light with a polished aluminum finish!

I'm not going to get into the conversation over height of pendant lights, but I will add that you should definitely mix metals. It's what gives kitchens visual interest, makes them look custom/new/modern, and keeps them from looking like builder grade. And that would be especially important to you because your kitchen is so white and could lean to the boring side if you're not careful. So in other words ... do not match your pendant lights to your faucet finish.

How close should I hang 2 pendants over my kitchen island?

Thank you all for your input! I drew it on paper and the lights look too close together using the 1/3 rule (28" from edge), and they look too far apart centering them on the sides of the sink (13.5" from edge). So, I've decided to split the difference and center them 21" from the ends. This gives 24" between the pendants in the center of the island, and 12" from the edge of the island to the pendant. Even with hubby being 6'5", I don't think he'll hit his head. I drew it out (side view and top view below). Please let me know if there are any fatal flaws in this plan! p.s., our ceilings are 9', so I can easily have the bottom of the pendants 36" from the top of the island - thanks for the tip Jan!

Jan, thanks so much for your quick response. I really appreciate it. The smaller size fixture option is 12" in diameter. Since the ceiling is 10' and the island is 49" x 91" and the kitchen is open to a huge great room with 12" ceilings. What do you think...20" or 12" fixtures?

12 inch. Frankly 24 inches between two 20 inch would feel crowded no matter ten foot ceiling.
