The garage and it's poorly thought out bump up torpedoed the Colonial Revial facade long before the new windows ever did. No decor changes will fix what feels wrong here. It's an architectural issue, not a decor issue. You might as well go with the direction that the home currently trends toward, which is modern, especially since you aren't going to change the windows. I think if you redid the roof as a flat roof and concentrated on "color blocks" and other rectangular and linear shapes, you could manage to pull what's there to the modern side. You could also redo the garage bump up area by making that roofline shorter and smaller and "nest" into the main gable end rather than being on the same plane. Turn the windows into dormers and do the whole addition in a darker color for it to recede from the main box of the house and that would take it back to the more traditional side. You would still need to change the windows to a more traditional muntin look or add muntins to the existing windows.

Hi, we are renovating the exterior of our home. We recently did a white mortar wash on the brick (a suggestion I got from this site!), and we are now trying to decide on the color for the siding, trim, and accent color on the door. We have a sample up now (you can see to the right of the middle window in the 2nd photo). The color is a light gray body, with a darker gray trim. I feel the gray is too light and will wash out the house. I'm thinking of going a little darker, but then the trim would need to be darker, and I worry it would be too dark. Not sure if white trim would look ok or not, especially given the detail in the right peak of the house. I would think we would want that to stand out. Any suggestions on siding and trim colors would be greatly appreciated! Lighter or darker siding color? Lighter or darker trim color? With the windows and garage doors I would probably go with the same color for the fascia and gutters. I think white siding would look too stark in the gable ends. Something in the taupe family to bridge the dark trim/windows and the lighter brick would look nice.
