dining room Design Dilemma Home Decorating

chandelier and dining room wall advice

I have a huge blank wall in the dining area above which is the second story loft. We would like to place a chandelier centered to the wall above the dining table. but it's not clear to me what would be the best configuration for the single chandelier.

My feeling is that it should be 3' above the dining room table, perhaps rectangular in configuration. But I can't help but to think maybe I need something that is dangly and long so that it spans both stories and is visible from both the loft and the dining room.

The ceiling is about 17 feet high above the dining table.

would like to display art on the wall too.

Not sure what to do with this wall in general, whether to leave blank or place facade.

Our style is more modern but not as fancy as most modern homes.

Do you have the dining table yet? or know which one you will like? Long and dangly would be pretty, but I'm not sure how much you would actually see from the loft. Depending on the table style, and artwork I would pick the light fixture after those choices.

With a large white wall like this the art possibilities are wide open. Here are some initial ideas for your consideration.

Hope you don't mind me taking a few liberties with Photoshop - it looks better without the vacuum =)

Take a picture of the whole room not "the wall", try also standing up on the landing and shooting the room from there as well. Also, this room is narrow, so if you could draw a floor plan. And we need to see the ceiling. You can drop mono-rail lighting down and and focused light on the art, Tech lighting, WAC lightng try looking at their inspo pictures. I can help you more than that without some wide room shots and a floor plan. And yes that picture is way too small. You could even try hanging a real used window frame there. But I would probably do two pictures on that wall because of the size of the room. Another option, if there is an outlet on that wall and electrician maybe able to add a wall outlet.

The phone booth should be angled into the corner. IMO. Those sconces might just become dots on a wall at this point, the eye already has a lot to look at. And if you are not going to actually wire them, I would find another room for them. ( they are awesome) if anywhere on either side of the doorway to the kitchen closer to the door frame, not centered to the wall.

Hmm - I like the small prints a lot too. The spacing is great & their leaf images play nicely with the leafy wreath effect in the script art on left & the tree. And, having only one script art instead of two makes the arrangement less busy for the eyes wanting to read the scripts instead of looking at the nice arrangement as a whole. Sounds like I’ve made my decision that I like your last arrangement the best! So as you & I both know - that’s the beauty of the velcro hangers - we can change our minds & not have walls looking like dart boards!

With that much space, you could even do multiple lights! I agree, wait until you have your style decided and furniture at least envisioned. Might help to do an "idea board" or whatever that is called.
