Thanks for all your advice. I'm so glad that I didn't just rush in and start this. From the sounds of it, I WOULD HAVE ruined them . . . :^0 . . . OMGosh! I need to run all this by DH. He's been encouraging me to call up and order a set I like that I saw in Phoenix Home & Garden magazine spread. I can't imagine ordering anything that big and expensive sight unseen, though. Hmmmmmm, there may be a weekend trip to Scottsdale in the offing ;^) In the mean time, I need to decide whether I want to paint the set a brown first and them give the Gel Stain a go or just leave it as is until I get a new set. BTW, I haven't looked into having it professionally stripped and redone. I probably should. I can't imagine a red or blue table in our dining room, though. I'll have to think about that one.

Thank you @JustMe, I understand what you are saying about ordering the singles. That certainly is an option. Let me clarify myself....we wouldn't be removing a coffer to hang a light. In fact, we would be adding the coffer. We toyed with the idea of adding a coffer to the dining room ceiling anyways prior to purchasing the light. We are the builders so we can add this at any point before we go to drywall. The ceiling in that room can either be a tray or a coffered ceiling. If we do put a coffered ceiling in this room, the base of the light could be mounted on the beam of the coffer. By doing so, the hanging globes would then be the correct height above the table. Sorry if I wasn't clear in my original post. So I guess my question now would be if the light would look weird if it was mounted to the beam of the coffer?

Change the swing of the powder room door, so that the person in the kitchen never has a view of the toilet. Do you have a peninsula with chairs in your kitchen? Your current traffic paths through your house are causing you problems. Here's how they look now. People crossing the middle of the family room/living room to pass through. The pathway from the door through the dining room effectively reduces its size too. I'd close that door off to help traffic through the dining room. Optionally, I'd also open the space by the basement steps to the living room, and move the doorway between the living and dining rooms.
