You could do the same thing in the living room as you have in your bedrooms. That is, if it's not too difficult to run new cables between the fan boxes and the switch. You will need two circuits...one for the fan and one for the light. I'm betting you only have one now. However, with fan/light combos...it can be very easy these days. If you don't want the hassle and expense of running new cable, (might be a real pain in a vaulted ceiling) most fan manufacturers offer wireless control. I run two fan/light combos on my back patio that way. The wireless switch mounts in the wall (single switch) and controls the fan speed and lights...it even dims the lights. The receiver mounts at the fan and is hidden. It works perfectly.

Pipdog - Sorry, I missed your earlier post. That house was the inspiration for one of my neighbor's remodels! Interestingly, they painted everything white BUT the fireplace and put in similar light wood flooring. Their fireplace is on an outer wall, not in the center, so it doesn't really stick out. Palimpsest - LOL on the mullet. I admit, I did have a mullet haircut 5(?) years ago when they were back in style, and DH had the faux-hawk. But hair is temporary by its nature, and I like looking silly. :) I didn't mean to be dismissive of "whatever this is" but I honestly don't know what to call it. I'm a big fan of modernism, and I'm clueless when it comes to transitional decor. I understand modern design principles, but ask me which chair goes with which table in a transitional home and I'm at a loss. And I'm really not a preservationist. We are making significant changes. The siding is definitely not original (I'd argue better than the stucco). We're updating the kitchen and baths, removing walls, etc. And our furniture is definitely not period correct. The house I posted above with the metal sheets is from a Dwell home tour and dubbed the "Hyper Eichler" by the architect. He approached the update by considering what the architects / builder might have done if the materials and building technology of today was available back then. I think it stays true even with the numerous changes from the original finishes, and I try to keep this approach in mind. Marcolo - I don't know that wanting to paint a fireplace or making any non-standard MCM chalterations is necessarily due to a lack of appreciation or trend following. Most of my neighbors truly believe they appreciate the MCM nature of their homes and probably wouldn't know a current trend if it hit them in the face, but they make all kinds of changes that purists would cringe at: granite counters, shaker cabinets, atrium conversion, fireplace removal, wood flooring, etc etc etc. A lot of it is due to tweaking their homes for their lifestyle (fireplace in the way, needed sq footage from atrium), or something I often hear is the emphasis on natural materials (granite counters, wood floors) despite the fact they're replacing formica and VCT.

I read there were other lights, that's why I referenced this: If you don't like fans, abandon the ceiling box. Most likely, the fan light is over foot space or non-main circulation space. A recessed light will compete and detract from the accent wall eyeball light(s) and perimeter lights that creates a mood behind/around the seating area, where a central light will just blast light down and hit your foot space or the corner of the coffee table. All assumptions without good pics and more information, but those assumptions are standard fare for living rooms (see I assumed there were 4 "corner" lights and was right). A hanging fixture, however, will diffuse light better and fit the inner seating area better for the mood if you choose to have some central light there. I don't participate in decor advice, but other commenters may visit and have great ideas to offer on what fixture.

In most vaults like this you CANNOT do recessed lighting there is simply no room for the can or the electrical because of the vault. Typically this is why the track is used. 1. TAKE THE EXISTING TRACK HEAD DOWN SO YOU KNOW WHAT TYPE OF CONNECTION TO BUY. 2. REPLACE THE TRACK HEADS ONLY WITH SMALLER DISCRETE ONES. 3. IF YOU WANT A CHANDELIER YOU CAN POWER IT OFF THE TRACK AND JUST SWAG IT OVER TO WHERE YOU WOULD WANT IT TO HANG. JUST AS ADDITIONAL NOT THE SOLE LIGHTING FOR THE SPACE. The idea of putting recessed here kills me the architecture of the home deserves more than that IMO
