Need a dark purplish-red FRAGRANT rose
Comments (12)I have three reblooming moss roses that fit your color specifications: James Veitch, Deuil de Paul Fontaine and Eugenie Guinoisseau. James Veitch reblooms very well for me, but he is a very slow growing rose and is still only about 1 1/2 feet after two years. I know he will build to a decent size eventually, but he is slow. The other two less than one year in the ground for me, but they have been blooming their heads off. I do not know how well they repeat as yet. James Veitch and DdPF are darker than Eugenie. My favorite is James Veitch. I also have SdDJ and I love it, but rebloom is just a smattering in fall. Another dark beauty is Eugene Furst. While it is still in a pot, it has been blooming up a storm. You might check these out with other sources to see if they fit your criteria. Lastly, I do love Madame Isaac Perreire, though she is not a dark red-purple. She is more of a dark pink-violet-purple. She is smelly and reblooms well. Good luck with your quest!...See MoreLooking for a moderately sized dark pink or red rose
Comments (40)I grow two Rose de Rescht bushes here in hot, humid Alabama. I planted them last February in all day sun. The bushes are nice rounded mounds that are about 3 ft x 3 ft now. The bushes are attractive and have stayed pretty clean without spraying. The blooms are beautiful and smell like heaven. Each had a big first flush...completely covered in blooms and have had good rebloom since. They haven't been covered in blooms again, but have consistently had several blooms each. The blooms don't last long on the bush and only a day as a cut flower, but the petals fall off and self clean without drying up and turning ugly. Color is pretty true to the first pics below that were taken in very hot September...not as purple as they look in the last couple pics which were taken in spring on a different camera....See MoreThe pink, red, and purple-ish bushes/trees near Phoenix?
Comments (42)I went to the Central Velley last summer for the first time (Fresno area) and I too was blown away by the incredible Crape's growing all over the place. The entire region is irrigated, even the strip of land between the local interstate lanes! It was all very lush and yards were filled with everything from palms to paper birch trees! Yes..paper birch in Fresno. But, in those areas that no longer received irrigation...forget about it...not a green thing in sight...totally dead. I guess unlimited sun + unlimited irrigation + great soil = grow anything you want....See More"purple" roses that are too "red" ; remedies?
Comments (29)I wonder if there is more to it than just ph though? I've had mine change colors in the same day and last week's candy apple red Mr. Lincoln (which turned tomato red with sugar added) is this week's purplish Mr. L for no apparent reason. My Midnight Blues can look just like Ebb TIde or can go almost to a bluish black velvet tone, sometimes purplish black. But both MB and Mr. L can have a velvet quality so I wonder if that has something to do with it? Ebb Tide has started out the morning dark violet and ended up dark burgundy by afternoon. My first Madame IP's blooms were all a gorgeous shade of violet and now they are magenta which I dislike immensely. It is a bit warmer though but expecting a cold front with the thunderstorms tonight. I'm going to start paying closer attention to this!...See MoreFruitCat (GA 7b)
