Thanks Fruitcat. In all the photos the aging blooms are toward the back. Younger ones are toward the front, so you can see the amount of fading. It has been very hot here unfortunately, already over 100 for a few days recently.

Violette is young here, but it holds it’s color well so far too. I should have included it. Dark Desire isn’t blooming here yet this spring, otherwise I would have included it too.

Here’s some bush photos, just because I think they’re helpful.

Violette and Souvenir du Docteur Jamain are in this one. Quite a few others are in there too, so it may not really be helpful since it is probably hard for most to tell which is which. Violette is the one climbing all over, from the center of the photo, with the little leaves. SdDJ is at the base of the arch on the right side of the photo, climbing up to meet Cecile Brunner and Nahema.

Falstaff is on the obelisk to the left here. Young Lycidas is on the obelisk to the right of Falstaff.

Yves Piaget has a wonky habit so I have mine (2 different bushes) intermingling with other roses to hide it’s weird and angular growth... I also have mine propped up a bit by tall peony-style cages/obelisks.

Pretty Lady Rose is a total front yard, prime location type of rose bush. Perfect, lush, green foliage. Extremely healthy. Big ol fragrant blooms. Very pretty growth habit.

Black Bacarra isn’t a bad bush at all (here) for a florist rose. Lots of other stuff in there with it.

Quite splendid, so beautifully arranged for show purposes.. I especially like the very first photo because of that attractive bench and the background with the brown pot..

Your training methods along the fence are much like mine, with similar materials, although I don't have trellis at the top... looking forward to seeing those in full bloom.

Just gorgeous and incredibly helpful in the comparison of colors! Every shot looks like it belongs in a high-toned Gardening magazine showing the elegance of roses and their surroundings. It has been a rough week at work so I'm enjoying gazing at your peaceful oasis of loveliness over lunch for a little mental break.

You should post some of these comparisons on hmf under the roses mentioned (perhaps the closeups plus one group shot) since a lot of folks really want to know the relative color of the roses. Your photos tend to be true to the actual colors of the roses as far as I can tell so that would be really helpful to the rose community at large.
Besides, I'd get to return to the rose loveliness again on another grey rainy day like this without hunting the GW archives (smile).

Such a helpful comparison of rose color, size and bloom form. Falstaff is my favorite for it's form. So is it in the obelisk because it is very floppy otherwise?

Totoro Flastaff is not floppy here, but it grows into a short climber due to our long season and warm weather. In comparison, Young Lycidas and Yves Piaget are definitely floppy and need the obelisks for support.

Cori Ann, how wonderful to line up these lovelies for a little beauty pageant and some easy comparisons. I love them all, but only grow Young Lycidas. I'd go for Falstaff, but Munstead and The Prince will have to do for me and my lack of space. However, I'm nuts about Pretty Lady. I need a large bloomed HT with long stems for bouquet making. This is something I've neglected, and she would fill the bill, I think. And Polarnacht is so fabulous. It can certainly compete with the roses. Diane

I bought and am growing a brand new ebbtide. But I saw it yesterday in Bloom at the local nursery and it has a very smoky color to it not sure I love that. That was my fear when I bought it hopefully it will have just a more violat color to it than the dark muddy smoky color.

The crazy thing was they had it grafted and growing on a tree rose with Julia Child

Those double grafted tree roses have gotten popular around here too Kristine. Another tree rose combo I have seen a lot of is burgundy iceberg with iceberg. If someone has a small garden, but wants lots of color I think it is a good idea and makes sense.
