Drop-in sink and minimum base cabinet width

I'm looking to replace my old double sink with a single bowl. The old sink is self rimming, 33" by 22", sitting on a base cabinet of 34.2 by 22.8 (attachment shows the dimension). However, pretty much everywhere I look, a 33" by 22" single bowl sink would require a minimum base cabinet 36 and up. Is this a new requirement, as the old sink was installed more than 20 years ago? Will I be able to fit in a new one with the same spec?

The Kohler 3821 - 1 is a beautiful 22"x33" single bowl that will drop into that cabinet without a problem.

If your top isn't plastic laminate, you can undermount that sink too.

With face framed cabinets you lose approx 1-1/2" in the cabinet opening...leaving you with a 4-1/2" opening in a 6" cabinet. But, there's a way you can get all 6" of the opening even in face framed cabinets...use what's known as a "filler pullout". These are pullouts that are installed by attaching them to the walls of the cabinets on either side. I.e., it's not a 6" cabinet, it's a 6" opening b/w two cabinets w/a pullout installed in the space. This is a great way to utilize every inch, especially for those narrow places. They're available for a space as narrow as 3" (like those pesky 3" fillers you need here & there...you might be able to install these in some of them!) I have two 6" ones in my kitchen...flanking my cooktop. One thing, though, get the one w/adjustable shelves. That's what I thought I was getting, but it didn't turn out that way. There are also some w/open tops...a big plus as well. Dave... I will do so when I get home...I'm on vacation this week. What I do know is that I have 1/2" walls in my cabinets and the sink does almost completely fill the opening, but there was no scooping. I have some pictures I can post, but I'm not sure if they will tell you much. Here you can see in the upper left where the "block" was installed for the sink rim to sit on. In this one, in the lower right you can see the small bowl is not quite against the wall of the cabinet. BTW...when I say "exterior" or "overall" width, that includes the exterior rim of the sink as well. So, the 35-1/8" includes the 1" rim all around the sink. The starting point for the 35-1/8" measurement should have actually been 1" over to the left and the ending point of the 10-1/2" measurement should have been 1" over to the right. The overall measurement, rim-to-rim, is 35-1/8". My sink is: 1" rim + 21-3/8" bowl + 1.25" separator + 10.5" bowl + 1" rim = 35-1/8" If I had had a single bowl sink, I could have fit up to a sink with interior dimensions of 33" w/1" exterior rim (so 35" overall/exterior width) w/o scooping

Can a drop-in sink be mounted directly to a custom cabinet base?

Can I get a 24" wide drop-in sink and mount it directly onto a 24" cabinet base? I assume that I will need to custom build the cabinet to basically frame the sink. If I do this, are there any unforeseen issues? With a custom built cabinet, I don't see any reason why not. Issues-- No room/ no way inside the cabinet for mechanical fasteners to mount the sink to the cabinet. But there are excellent adhesive products like Lexel, etc. that would glue & seal the sink rim to the cabinet. Very little/ no margin for error as regards finished cabinet dimension and dimensions of sink rim. Give thought to the deck area behind the faucet. Will you need some space behind the faucet? Also, the faucet choice--don't want to bust your knuckles against the wall operating the faucet. How to protect the wall? Also, keep in mind that since the front of the sink rim will be flush with the front of the cabinet, that means there will be no counter top overhang to protect the front of the cabinet/ cabinet doors. To look right, the doors will need to be inset in the frame (not overlay doors). Inset doors require more skill to fit & hang. And there is still the potential for water to collect on top of the doors--not good. Alternatively, you could design an inset into the cabinet itself. A 'stepped' front where the apron of the front overhangs the doors. (And think about the door pull, too.) This would be the better choice although it reduces interior storage space.) I have a similar situation of needing to replace an ugly, old, cheap, pitted, stained laundry sink with very little extra room. I'm considering getting a commercial (single well stainless steel restaurant) sink. You might consider that as well, if you can live with the industrial look of it. IMO, this would be the easiest & cheapest solution.

Centerline of sink has to be 15” off the side wall. Code doesn’t care about counter space per se just clearances.

This is one of the sinks I’m looking at. It’s beautiful. So the recommended minimum cabinet size is not a huge issue ? I’m doing drop in and countertop is granite.

You must look at the SPECS. ....For your sink. Your link or photo did not post. You have been given three above that fit your cabinet.

If you are trying to do an UNDER MOUNT sink, that is different than drop in. And yes, you must pay strict attention to minimum cabinet required.

Sorry, but sink manufacturers write specifications to allow fat plumber hands access to provided clips to be able to tighten them. If you strap your undermounted sink (Hercules Universal Sink Harness or Sink Strap), the clips are eliminated along with the reason for accessing them. The sink is tightened at the bottom which anyone can access no matter how fat their hands. This allows a much smaller sink base cabinet to be utilized than specified.

I rarely advise disregarding manufacturer's specifications/hardware, but clips are a poor method for attaching undermounted sinks. We wouldn't have methacrylate seams in solid surface or thermoforming if fabricators hadn't disregarded manufacturer's specifications. The profit motive births innovation. I'm installing sinks that other fabricators say "Can't be done." There is money to be made doing that.

On a drop in sink as I pictured, I couldn't easily access the clips in the middle of the sides, only the front and rear. Yes, Kohler wanted the side clips installed. Boo hoo; that sink doesn't leak or budge.
