Can a drop-in sink be mounted directly to a custom cabinet base?

I am renovating my laundry room and getting rid of an old dingy free-standing utility sink. I have about 25 inches to work with where the old sink was in between the wall and washing machine. I like having a large sink (24" wide) but don't want to add another free-standing utility sink. Can I get a 24" wide drop-in sink and mount it directly onto a 24" cabinet base? I assume that I will need to custom build the cabinet to basically frame the sink. If I do this, are there any unforeseen issues?

No but you could use a 24" IKEA cabinet with a countertop and 22" sink

With a custom built cabinet, I don't see any reason why not.

Issues--

No room/ no way inside the cabinet for mechanical fasteners to mount the sink to the cabinet. But there are excellent adhesive products like Lexel, etc. that would glue & seal the sink rim to the cabinet.

Very little/ no margin for error as regards finished cabinet dimension and dimensions of sink rim.

Give thought to the deck area behind the faucet. Will you need some space behind the faucet? Also, the faucet choice--don't want to bust your knuckles against the wall operating the faucet. How to protect the wall?

Also, keep in mind that since the front of the sink rim will be flush with the front of the cabinet, that means there will be no counter top overhang to protect the front of the cabinet/ cabinet doors. To look right, the doors will need to be inset in the frame (not overlay doors). Inset doors require more skill to fit & hang. And there is still the potential for water to collect on top of the doors--not good.

Alternatively, you could design an inset into the cabinet itself. A 'stepped' front where the apron of the front overhangs the doors. (And think about the door pull, too.) This would be the better choice although it reduces interior storage space.)

I have a similar situation of needing to replace an ugly, old, cheap, pitted, stained laundry sink with very little extra room. I'm considering getting a commercial (single well stainless steel restaurant) sink. You might consider that as well, if you can live with the industrial look of it. IMO, this would be the easiest & cheapest solution.

This reply is very late, but it is possible to install a self-rimming Kohler Epicurean sink below like an undermount sink. Tile is no longer popular, so my 1987 install of this sink would most likely require some other countertop surface now. I wanted the convenience of a countertop that drained into the sink for easy cleaning. Just be sure to replace the silicone mold-resistant caulking around the joint that is missing in this photo.

i found the to-scale drawing i made of a 30" base cabinet i liked, with an inset door and 2 drawers. the cabinet itself is 30" wide by 32" high, without counter; the countertop will have to be longer if you want any overhang. i plan to build this myself, for my kids' bathroom. i think its a nice looking cabinet. here are some details of the front that might help you. there is a false drawer front (which could be a tilt-out) at the top of the cabinet. it's 4 1/2" tall x 25 1/4" long. above and below it are the top and middle horizontal pieces (rails) of the frame, each at 2 1/4" wide. this covers the basin area. below, starting at 9" down from the cabinet's top (not including the counter top) are the door and drawers. the door is 12 3/4" wide x 16 7/8" tall. the inner edge of the door is in the center of the cabinet. the drawers are each about 10 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" tall. the vertical members on the right, left and middle of the face frame (stiles) are 2 1/4" wide, as are the top, middle and bottom rails (horizontal members.) in addition, it has 4" tall legs, which are the tapered ends of the stiles. since the drawers are not at the very top, they don't interfere with the basin. and if you wanted all drawers and no door, you could modify it.

My first thought is an 18" dw is fine for a small rental kitchen. We rented out part of the lower part of our first house. We went to trouble and expense to make the kitchen better than what was there. Long story short, every single tenant we had religiously bought take out and used the larger fridge we bought for some lonely leftovers, beverages and condiments. The second to last tenant asked us to remove the island to fit his big sectional in and the last guy did not use it either. We wasted well over $1k, when we were new homeowners and cash was tight, in an effort to have a better rental unit. I'd do a modest size sink and give them more drawer space. You don't want them able to pile up too many dishes anyway.... Ikea has great options for smaller kitchens. Try out their online planner and ask for help when you go there.

Thanks for the headsup, angela12345. I measured the GD and went to HD to measure the interior dimension of a 30" sink base cabinet. My oh my, a 30" sink base is TINY! But, it will have to do for now. The 33" sink base has more space inside and I wish we could put it in our layout without my being so bothered. Sigh. Alas, I really can't stand how the spacing of the sink base is uneven in relation to the already lopsided window on the wall. It makes me feel I am living in the winchester mystery house! So far, I have ascertained that it can hold our trash, recycle bin and compost pail, with a smidge of room left for fire extinguisher. Definitely no room for insta-hot water heater and filter. So, we nix that from our wish list. I am looking for a single bowl undermount. After some online research, I found a kindred sink KCUS30A-10/10BG that I like but I don't know if it's available online or not. I wish I could use the ticor sink but the one I like needs a 33" sink base. Bummer. The kindred sink I am interested in will have interior dimension of 27"W x 16"L x 10"H. The console sink is not as deep as a typical laundry tub sink, though. That could be a factor for the OP. It is for me because I have an old school full fill top load Speed Queen washer that drains into the sink.
