Better lighting for a start. Bigger lamps. More substantial, fuller drapes, some art. Your duvet seems to go well with your wall color. Can you post photos with more light?

Some elements that would lighten your room:

--Round mirror over tall dresser to reflect light from the window across the way.

--Taller bedside lamps with white modern drum shades

--White plantation shutters would totally block out light and echo your duvet's tropical pattern.

--Horizontal art over the bed that echoes your duvet--skyscapes, abstracts, themes to link to your duvet.

I see a bed, two nightstands and a highboy. Is that the extent of your bedroom furniture? Can you include a photo of the 4th wall of the room? What are you looking at if you are sitting in bed?

I would take everything off from the top of the chest which just looks like clutter and hang a mirror or painting over it. Definitely your room needs art, perhaps some flowers, landscapes, birds in a realistic style to tie in with your duvet, although other styles in the colors that pick up the bedding colors would also work. Choose only what you love and it will work. Much larger lamps as stated; they should be at least as high as the headboard. I would choose plain off-white thick drapes to coordinate with the bedding, which will make the room look lighter. Yours right now are much too skimpy. You can pull together a really nice look with just a few changes. I can't see your carpeting, unfortunately.

Agree on the drapery panels. Not sure about "skimpy", but they definitely clash with the duvet/cover which seems to be a keeper.

CAVEAT: I am a big fan of very calm bedroom spaces. Tone on tone, not a lot of artwork that challenges/excites the eye. This is a place to rest, sleep, love. Make it one.

Try this: Get rid of everything in the room, except for the furniture. Bedding, too.

Lay down on your bed. See where your eyes "rest". Important. Decide whether the paint color is meaningful to you. The color you have is fairly neutral, but looks very different, night and light of day. Paint is the easiest way to affect a very restful space. There are enough colors on your chosen duvet to really get inspired.

Unless birds are a complete passion of yours, I suggest no more within art work. Duvet brings interest, but don't let it get too busy.

Really look at ambient lighting- where do you need it? Is what you have adequate? Either add or subtract.

Mirrors. In any space, but especially the bedroom, you need to consider what they will reflect. Reflection, in a bedroom, can be nice. It can also be very harsh. What will you see? Do you like it?

Then just fill in. Start with making your bed like a pro- even once. The way we live is a far cry from "staging", but imagine this as a calm space, designed. Do you need a blanket/throw, in a solid color?

And add more. At each stage, think about the space you are creating for yourself. Sometimes, editing is necessary.

Art is last. Consider any pieces you have, or go on sites like Art.com and find your bliss, inexpensively.

Now that I can see better I like most of what you have. I like the idea of a shade plus drapes. But I’d do bamboo or wood maybe with whitish drapes. Paint white vent the wall color. Would you consider painting your wood trim white? If not, I’d consider painting the white doors.

How high is your ceiling? Looks pretty low, so I don't think crown molding will help raise it visually. The paint color seems awfully muddy to me. Would you consider painting? At a minimum, paint the white vent to match the wall color. I can see that you have the TV on the lower dresser, but the wider furniture piece would look better on the wider wall, so I'd reverse the two chests. Perhaps you could wall mount the TV on an articulating arm so it can be adjusted for best viewing from the bed.

Your wall color looks nice with your bedding. I would keep it. I like the contrast. Not everyone ones a monochromatic room void of color. I'd consider changing the curtains to the lightest color in the duvet. Ikea has inexpensive sets or I also like bleached drop cloths. There's a bunch of tutorials out there on how to make curtains. Some look better than others. It's all in how they make them and install and ironing is very important before they go up. I like that they have some weight to them. Other than that I'd get new taller more substantial lamps. I've read that 28" is about the height you want for bedside lamps. I think a white/cream color would be nice and hang a piece of art above the bed. I really like the first painting Housegal posted with your duvet but art is personal so hang whatever makes you happy. I'd prime and paint the wall vent and if you feel like it while the paint is out, I'd also tackle the backplates to the wall switches and outlets.

I would not spend money on hanging crown in there. I have 8' ceilings and I honestly wish we wouldn't have bothered installing crown. I think it does make the ceilings lower. I just think there are plenty of other things that could be done to most rooms that would give a better bang for the buck than adding crown.

First off we'd recommend replacing the window treatments with something that compliments that bedding better. Also adding lamps that are more substantial and artwork that will help brighten up the room.
