Room of the Day: Porcelain Inspires a Bedroom’s Saturated Color
Blue-and-white walls and accessories complement existing furnishings and a ceramics collection in an Atlanta guest room

Houzz Contributor. Hi there! I live in a 1940s cottage in Atlanta that I'll describe as "collected."
I got into design via Landscape Architecture, which I studied at the University of Virginia.

This guest room went from blah to dramatic, thanks to inspiration from one of the homeowners’ collections. “My clients already had all of the furniture but needed help pulling their guest room together, because it was just boring beige and white,” interior designer Grayson Pratt says. “Their collection of antique chinoiserie blue-and-white porcelain inspired the look.”

Guest Room at a Glance
What happens here: This is an inviting room for the overnight guests of a family of four.
Location: Atlanta
Size: 144 square feet (13.3 square meters)
Designer: Grayson Pratt
This room is a great example of how much it can help to call in a designer even when your room is already fully furnished. Paint, a rug and some new accessories and bedding were the only things Pratt introduced here, but these were the things that made the room polished and complete.
By the time she started in here, Pratt had helped the homeowners personalize five other rooms in the house. Their lovely collection of antique blue-and-white chinoiserie porcelain ginger jars, vases, lamps and plates around the house inspired her to go deep blue on the walls. “I knew that saturated blue walls would be striking, but their tastes are quite traditional. But when I proposed the wall color and showed them the rug, I found they were totally onboard,” she says.
Wall paint: Champion Cobalt, Benjamin Moore; accent pillows and rug: Surya

While some of the pieces are original to the homeowners’ collection, Pratt filled in with some new pieces as well. “Of course for the real deal, I think shopping antique stores is best, but I was also able to find some great pieces at HomeGoods,” she says. “You never know what you’ll stumble upon there!”
Not wanting to bust the budget, she used all of their furniture and some of their porcelain pieces. Luckily, the existing chandelier worked well with the new decor. Two new mirrors over the nightstands reinforce the symmetry and help bounce the light around. Pratt brought in the console table from another room, and it lines up perfectly with the existing chair rail.
For the chair rail, Pratt matched the wall paint rather than paint it white like the rest of the molding. “When a chair rail breaks up the wall in a room like this, it can look dated,” she says. “My clients didn’t want to remove it, so painting it the same color helped it blend in.” The result is more uniform and less fussy, so that the porcelain can get the attention it deserves.

To stay on budget, Pratt used her clients’ existing white coverlet, which she knew would work well. She then pulled the bedscape together with chinoiserie and classic Greek key prints on the throw pillows and a new duvet cover that works well with the Greek key pattern. “I love Greek key. It fits in just about anywhere,” she says.
“This really was a true pull-it-together job, and my clients absolutely love the room,” the designer says. “I’m so fortunate that they trusted me.”
