Double Wall Oven Dilemma

Looking for help in deciding on an electric double wall oven. I think I have it narrowed down to two choices but am having a hard time making a final decision. Right now I am considering the Bosch Benchmark with the side swing door and the GE Café French Door oven. The oven will sit beside a 5 door Kitchen Aid refrigerator. I have measured the clearance for the oven door openings and I would be able to open the swing doors of both to about 110 degrees. I would not be able to open them to the full 180 degrees because of the proximity of the refrigerator and a wall on the other side of the oven. I have been able to see both ovens at a local store and have been able to replicate the max amount the doors would be able to open.

Just as an FYI the other appliances in the kitchen are an 800 series Bosch Dishwasher, Bosch Microwave and a GE Café Induction cooktop and all are standard stainless steel.

Weighing the pros and cons of each:

GE Cafe

Pros:

· Look of the French Oven Door with the handles and manual dials would fit with my kitchen and look good next to the refrigerator

· WiFi Connectivity

· Convection where the air is pulled through the top cavity and re-circulated

· 3 Halogen lights

· Overall power of the broiler and oven

Cons:

· Price (5,000-5,400 depending on sales)

· Is a GE Oven which does not carry the same name as higher end ovens (Resale value)

· Full Extension and regular oven racks feel flimsy compared to other brands

Bosch Benchmark

Pros:

· Price – I am able to get an employee pricing which would bring it to about 1500 less than the GE Café

· The overall feel of the oven door as it closes is very solid

· A single side door would open towards the wall which would not interfere with the refrigerator.

Cons:

· Reviews online have complained about the electronics and the extreme venting of heat out the front

· Does not have French Door handles

Any feedback either positive or negative is appreciated. I usually don’t struggle with appliance decisions like I have with this one. All my other choices were pretty easy.

I currently have an electric coil cook top, double wall ovens and the MW on the counter. My new kitchen will have a Bosch 500 series 36" gas cook top and a 30" Whirlpool regular double wall oven. The MW will go in a nook above a counter. I love having wall ovens so I don't have to bend over. When I help in a kitchen with a regular stove if feels awkward use the oven. Also, I've had both of my hips replaced and I cook enough that that type of thing matters. I went low middle of the road with my appliances and am reusing some. After reading here about the temperamental nature and need for uber exhaust with the high end ranges, I didn't feel for my needs it was worth the extra money. I'm putting my money into cabinets and good mechanical / plumbing.

I posted this in the appliance forum, but I am copying here in case someone else asks: Miele, Bosch and GE Café/Monogram/Profile make a version of what you are looking for. There are some differences but they all will accomplish 95% of what you are looking for it to do...and the 5% you can probably live without! http://mieleusa.com/Product/Details/1198 That is the miele speed oven. The higher end models have full broilers and can be ordered with a trim kit to match their ovens. Their menu is the most robust with a ton of options for all of their modes, plus some step up features like a probe for cooking. You also have options on there ovens depending how much you want to spend. It has a simpler control, less deluxe feature wise but still has a broiler and solid microwave. It does less in the "speedcook" department, but if you just bake/broil or microwave its a good option. This is also easier for install, its 2 units, but they install in 1 single opening to 1 single power supply. So if one breaks you can replace it and the other will work. The drawback to that is that if the control panel fails...both units will probably not operate since its a shared control. Otherwise they do some different things. They use convection and a halogen light heating element. So it doesn't have a traditional broiler, but the halogen works well for that. There is a lot more emphasis on speed cooking, as the menu is programmed with hundreds of different items that you can speed cook. Its an established design though they GE has been selling for years. The Café will be $3-4k and the monogram will be separate components so figure more like $5-6K

Hi Helen, yes, I could likely solve the depth problem, either in the back, or with a small trim on the front to build it up. The larger issue is the width. Weedmesiter, the issue is the actual cabinet front, not the cavity, vs the actual oven door width. I can fit it in the cavity with a 28.5" width. But the actual overall width of the 30" ovens is, well 30". My actual cabinet width is 30". So no room for any overlap, You essentially would not see the cabinet at all, and I believe on the left side, the oven door would interfere with the cabinet door to its left.

I use my steam oven for almost everything. It is much better at reheating food than a microwave or regular oven. For example, I had some leftover chinese food yesterday - microwaved rice is usually kind of hard. I put everything in the convection steam oven in the plastic and waxed paper takeout containers, set the oven to 220 degrees at 50% steam for 15 minutes - when it comes out, everything tastes great like it is fresh. If you keep the oven temperature below 220 or so, you can use plastic containers or your regular dining plates because they won’t melt - it’s the same temperature as putting them in the dishwasher. I could reheat the same food more quickly (in about 10 min) if I put it in an oven-safe container and turned up the heat. The food stays moist because of the steam. They’re really good for roasting chicken or broiling fish because the outside gets crispy, but the inside doesn’t dry out. Anything that you’d cook in boiling water on the stove can also be cooked in it - pasta, rice, quinoa, oatmeal, etc. You can stick an egg in there and make a hard boiled egg in 6-7 min. You can steam veggies, fish, lobster. and lots of people use it to get a chewy crust on bread. many people get rid of their microwaves when they have a steam oven, but I still like having a microwave for my kids’ food or some frozen meals. My oven has preprogrammed recipes - for example, you can tell it that you want to cook salmon, broccoli, and rice, and have everything ready by 6pm. It will then tell you what time to put everything in so that it is all ready at the same time - the flavors don’t mix in a steam oven so you can cook fish and broccoli in the same oven without a problem. You can also use it for sous vide cooking because it has very low precise temperatures. So basically it can be used as a regular oven without stream, a pure steamer, a sous vide cooker, or a combination for anything that you want to bake/heat but keep moist. The Miele oven that I have has a plumbed water line so I don’t have to refill the tank. I’ve also used it as an extra warming spot when my warming drawer gets full because you can turn the temperature on very low.
