GE profile double oven gas range vs. GE cafe double oven range
Comments (5)I went with the Profile double-oven gas: here are my reasons. I like the smaller-size top oven for daily use, and the lower oven will only be used on occasion, so I'm ok with its location. (There's no room for a wall oven in my tiny kitchen -- and I have no plans to tear out cabinets and rearrange.) I'm a good cook, and I honed my skills on low-end domestic ranges because that's what was available: I don't need a commercial range to cook what I like, and I'm too busy with other aspects of my life to change my cooking style now. I also prefer not to deal with "pro" level BTUS and the ventilation complications they might add. I also am not willing to give up self-cleaning ovens -- which puts many pro-style ranges out of contention. I liked the slide-in setup and the angled control-knob location on the Profile, so that, and the price advantage, led me to choose it over the Cafe. Re: price, I bought mine from a local dealer, and I got the price down a bit by asking them to meet the ajmadison.com price. They didn't quite get there, but I was willing to pay a little extra for local sales/delivery/service reliability. Comments (5)This is very interesting as I was thinking of a single wall oven plus a convection microwave as a second oven. We have a regular microwave as well. I really want the second oven for pies, keeping things warm etc but don't need 2 full size ovens as in a double wall oven. Consumer reports didn't seem to think much of the convection microwaves so that put me off. The microwave ovens would be on opposite sides of the kitchen which has some advantage. Comments (16)I'm glad we ended up with a 48" range. I like having a small oven and large oven. We seem to use the small oven about 90% of the time. The large oven comes in handy when needed. I like the idea of heating a smaller space for the majority of our oven use. My 87-year-old mother seems to use the "low" range ovens just fine. I think lifting a lasagna up to a higher oven would be a problem for her (especially since she broke her shoulder a few years ago and her range of motion has suffered because of it.) I'm all for convenience and would never get a low mw because I find them hard to see into and the controls hard to see. Neither of these problems are an issue with the range since the controls are at counter height and the racks slide out (and the viewing angle is better even without the racks pulled out--at least for the bottom rack.) We maximized our window space and sacrificed wall area in the process. I prefer using the limited space for tall cabinets for pantry items where hunting for things at eye level can be helpful. As weismann has pointed out, I have found the hood to be a good thing over the oven, especially when the kitchen gets over heated. I'm pretty sure the vent helps pull out the hot air from the oven vents. And visually, I really like a range. We have an older house and the black range seems to fit with the style better. Comments (17)We rarely have a need for a microwave, but after doing without for three years I knew I wanted one. We opted for the Bosch speed oven, and use it much more than I thought I would. Use is about 30% speed cooking, 20% microwave, and 50% of the time we use it as a small convection oven. However, the oven that has fully won me over is the steam oven. It is wonderful, and after some glitches with the control board it is working flawlessly (Bosch has been top notch for repair and service). It does everything that a regular microwave does except pop corn. Food reheated in a steam oven doesn't even compare to food reheated in a microwave. I've used all three (speed, steam, full size convection) at the same time on quite a few occasions and love having them all. However, if I had to pick just one of the smaller ones to go with my full size it would be the steam. I'd put a tiny microwave in the pantry for that rare need.
