Not a pro, love the valance and had them In my kitchen in the 90s. I think one over the sink in a fabric you love will be great. (The one in the picture makes me want one again.) Yes, hang it high and enjoy!

I'm firmly in the Traditional category and the word 'dated' makes me cringe. We all have varying tastes and that is what she likes - Are there Valance Police who are going to raid her home and arrest her???

Does the valance work with the rest of your decor? I think you should reconsider it, at least get a shade and assess the look holding it in place. If you go with the valance hanging it higher will block less light.

Agree with a few others, go as high as possible. Very pretty fabric.

The window frame should not show between the rod and top of valance. The rod doesn't need to go to the ceiling either. The bottom of the valance should come down into the glass some.

Not a valance person, but that is a great balance. Good choice!

At the red line , make sure some of the valance hangs down over the glass. Have you picked your fabric? I think it is very playful :)

I make custom window treatments. After years of grey/greige/neutral linen panels and roman shades, our workroom is actually starting to see a comeback of color and valances. If you like it and it works for you, go for it. Just make sure it's mounted high enough to cover the trim on top of the window. Let us see it when you're done.

However, my suggestions it to:

Install the rod so only a bit of the bottom of the valance covers the top of the window frame. Closer to the top! The rod DOES NOT need to align with the top of the cabinets. Raising the rod above the cabinet height creates visual interest in the space. Outside mount.

If you can go 2 times fullness on the valance you will be happy with the outcome.:) (Although I like them, one day Romans will look dated as well :)

hmm....that's a tough one. I'm stuck. The second has a more french country feel and the first one a little more modern. Maybe that helps...or makes it harder.

Definitely the first one. It looks great!!! I agree to move it up an inch or two.

North Coast Interiors - when you say the fabric does not lie flat, are you referring to the middle section or the side section? If you are referring to the middle section, it would hang flat once I hang it properly. I am seriously thinking about adding a rod pocket - not sure I like the clips.

I like the first one with rings, but I'm not a fan of the clips showing. There is a product called Clip Ring Tape you might be able to use to hide the clips, but still get the look with the rings.

Elevated the curtain rod. Thank you all for your comments, suggestions and ideas. I really appreciate it. Had fun with this little project. My husband is going to shorten the rod length a little and then I will add the finials. Thanks all.

Pretty. When DH cuts rod, I would raise the rod up so the bottom of valance covers just the top of window trim. It will let more natural light in and visually raise the ceiling. Nice job!

PS I like the inverted pleat look better too!

It needs to cover some of the glass or it'll look weird. I've never seen a valance that just sits on top of a window. Looks fine where it is.

There would have to be another strip of glass under that valance (2nd pic). It's not just covering the molding. It's also out of proportion to the length of the window, too short.
