How High Should we Hang Curtain Rods on an 8 ft Ceiling

We have two windows in the extension off our master. The ceiling is 8 ft high and the windows are pretty large. Should we hang 6 in above window which is halfway or go up 12 in which is at the top of the wall. Botg windows ar 57 1/2 x 70 in (not including the moulding). Excuse the mess we just moved!

Curtains generally look best if they are hung high and wide. Stock sizes of curtains are usually 84" or 95" long. Measure up from the floor to figure out where 84 will land in relation to your window. If 84 is too short, you'll have to use 95. 95 might be a little cramped by the ceiling but they will look better than panels that are too short.

If you are crafty, you could hem the 95s or add some fabric to the 84s.

Make sure your curtains appear wide enough to cover the windows even if you don't plan on closing them. You don't want them to look too skimpy.

I would hang them 3-inches above the top of the window molding which will line up to be just below the transom line. Reason: if you hang them higher than 3 inches there is too much wall showing below the rod and it will make those two narrow windows look narrower visually as it emphasizes the vertical. If, f.ex. the decision was made to remove those windows, take out everything between them and do a huge picture window in that space, then I would hang the draperies at the level of the top of the transom because the window would be much more horizontal and the effect would be different.

Consider the thickness of the head itself as well as the thickness of the shower pan and how much ceiling room you really have. Example, if the pan is 2" thick at the drain and the head is 3", you're at 8'7". A 17" arm now brings the bottom of the head to 7' above the floor tile. I usually recommend 7' as the lowest height for the bottom of a ceiling mounted rain head. If anyone in the house is over 6' tall, I'd recommend nothing longer than the 17". Funny enough she does like those since they don't look like an apartment vertical sliding blinds. That might actually be a good idea. It would slide to the right and wouldn't cover up the handle which would be good on my side. I know ill be loosing some of the overall glass real estate, but in the end that's ok.

@Jan Moyer We are building a guest house with 10’ ceilings and i am planning to install outside mount woven shades and sheers as in your mockup photo. I have 2 more days to do any additional blocking for shades and curtain rods. see photo i planned to hang rods about 9” from ceiling in case we later add crown moulding Question 1: is this height ok? 2. Is this enough blocking? or need more? 3. For nearby kitchen and mudroom windows, should they also be outside mounted to provide the most light ? or since they wont have sheers, should they be inside mounted? thanks!

Also give some thought to whether you might decide at some point to add crown molding to the ceiling.
