I'll Show You Mine If You Show Me Yours - Mon 4/9
Today is National Cherish an Antique Day. Rather than post a pic of myself....
My FIL was into clocks and rescued several of them. We knew it was old, but were so surprised to find one just like it in the Smithsonian! It was in the Arts & Industry building with things from the Centennial, so we figure it dates to c. 1876. This one was truly a school house clock as it still retains the emblem showing the room number. DH winds it faithfully and it's still keeping excellent time.
To me, the sound of a ticking clock is very soothing, and one way we can actually experience the past...hearing the exact same sound people heard over 100 years ago.

An amazing bust at the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C., Both are antiques.

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoNot sure if this is an antique. It belonged to a dear beloved person since the 60s and though I'm not a fan of clowns, it reminds me of her as it sat in her Living Room as long as I knew her.

6 years agoI have a clock though it's not an antique. In 1986 my sister came to visit and together we visited our brother in North Carolina. My people get a t-shirt for a souvenir but we all got grandfather clocks! Sure made for a memorable trip. :)

6 years agolast modified: 6 years agoI've been working on an old 8 day shelf clock. It had belonged to my wife's grandfather and we estimate that the clock was 70 yrs old when he acquired it. I have completely refurbished the mechanism. It was taken apart, chemically cleaned, shafts straightened, 10 bushings installed where pivot holes were worn, reassembled, lubricated, and a couple of timing parts adjusted (by bending - It was designed for this), new weight cords installed, and finished adjusting the pendulum a couple of days ago. Its now running like new and my instructor says it should be good for another 50 years.
The mahogany case has many cosmetic issues and I need to fabricate keys for the doors. These were lost long ago and replacements are not to be found. I have plans for repainting the glass windows and my nephew (the cabinet and wood worker) is willing to construct the missing top decoration if I supply him with plans.
This clock is a "Jared Arnold, jr" built in 1830 in Amber, NY. Many clock makers of that period bought brass strap movements from Bristol, Connecticut and put those into a clock cabinet of their own design. However, the authors of a clock book thinks that Jared Arnold made his own gears based on comparing Gear teeth counts to known Bristol movements. Arnold made this clock style for about 3 years and then sold his business to his partner. The case design changed at that point. Therefore, I can date this clock to within 3 years. An appraiser thought it was one of the first year's production based on the penmanship of the hand lettered clock face.
The pinkish smear and light area on the clock face are artifacts of light reflections and are not part of the face. The face is in better condition than it appears here.
Its old enough to be an antique.

6 years agoMy DH and I are fascinated by old clocks - the look, the wood, the workmanship that went into creating them but above all else - the ticking. As Annie said - it is soothing.
Over the years we've collected quite a few. This one is unusual, the bottom half opens to reveal a hidden storage area.
This is our house warming gift to ourselves - a Hudson River landscape.
