Q about support under quartz counters (for overhang)
Comments (11)Thanks, Mark and Calumin. I don't want to pretend to tell the fabricators how to do their job, I just like to be informed about options before I'm asked to make decisions. That Federal Brace site is fun-- I could find all sorts of fun things there as well as what I was looking for!...See Morecountertop overhang needs support (retrofit) - help pls!
Comments (16)Thanks to those who provided specific input :) . Lowes Canada doesn't source the Federal Brace 8-in x 2-in Plain Steel Countertop Support Bracket. Any suggestions for Canadian sources of those? Or equivalent? Trebuchet, I assume I would need three of the Federal Brace 8-in x 2-in brackets? Could I install the plywood inside the cabinets (there is room)? Is there a reason why I wouldn't use the "L" shaped granite support brackets that don't have the cross-brace (knee knocking) like the example below? What about this Ekena Millwork 2"x8"x8" Hamilton Bracket? Price is good. Cold-rolled steel and it's supposed to be appropriate for granite. Is there any way to evaluate the many different brands of cold-rolled steel granite brackets? I am still trying to understand is shimming the bracket end(s) will be required to get a snug fit to the granite, and if so how would that be done? Kudzu, that supplier doesn't ship to Canada unfortunately. This post was edited by feisty68 on Mon, Dec 29, 14 at 13:32...See MoreCountertop Radius and Overhang Thoughts?
Comments (8)Thanks for the input so far from everyone. The template resulted in an issue where I could use some more guidance. I talked to Cambria, and they say their 3cm countertops are good for an overhang up to 15"—which about matches what you said, Joseph. However, the fabricator is quoting Marble Institute of America and saying that I need supports for anything over 10". This is particularly presenting a problem since I have an overhang on two sides. The fabricator and KD both recommended products from Federal Brace, which I've also read good things about on these boards. The folks at Federal Brace pointed me to their "Harmony" line if I want truly hidden supports (which I do): http://www.federalbrace.com/harmony-countertop-support-brackets-122#related-product-1068 However, if you look at how that product works, there's no way to put more of them perpendicular to support the overhang on the adjacent side. The brace on the left-hand most side (looking at the diagram) would be in the way. Any ideas on what to do? The only options I can think of are: 1) Do a 10" overhang on the left-hand side—which I really don't want. 2) Argue with the fabricator—which also probably wouldn't end well. 3) Find another type of brackets to use everywhere 4) Use Federal Brace's Harmony on the long part of the overhang, but use some small braces from some other company's just on the left-hand side, such as this: https://www.amazon.com/FastCap-Stealth-Speed-Brace-Black/dp/B007J21L8M/ref=pd_bxgy_60_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5TJ8DWVFMGKE6HK0WNBG Am I missing options? What would you all do? Thanks!...See More3cm quartz countertop overhang needs supported over 10"?
Comments (14)Mark_rachel, its only 12" because there is door to my backyard to the right of it and a wall that juts out behind it that would create a bottleneck if the island is too big. That's the most I can have without blocking traffic. When it was designed I wanted a full two feet behind the sink so my kids could sit there without their stuff falling in the sink. It was decided to put cabinets in the back for a little extra storage without the need for extra support. I would love to have a slightly bigger overhang but I don't have to room and yes, I want the best I can get for my money. If you could have the exact same countertop for $2200 vs. $4500 isn't that the way you would go? I'm bucking at the supports because that is what the back cabinets were put there for, supports are going to get in the way of the doors. Mainenell, that's an interesting idea! It would require adapting the back cabinets though or it would block the doors opening. Weedmeister, thanks for the warning. It is firmly bolted in. My husband built the base on site because this house is old and the floor decidedly unlevel....See MoreE H
