Support for overhang on granite counter top.
Comments (38)Need advice please. have island 10ft long island x 4ft 2" (50inches)wide. overhang will be 12 inches down the entire 10ft length. have 24"d base cabinets plus another 12"d set of base cabinets back to back. (36 inches of base cabinets that granite will sit on). question is how many support posts will be needed down the 10ft length of overhang ?(14inch overhang) Will one support post on each end be sufficient or do I need 3? can't add metal supports into top of cabinets, not enough space between the cabinet doors and top of cabinets. no room for corbels. support posts are the only option. would like one on each end vs adding one in middle. help!...See MoreCounter top bar-do you need supports?
Comments (16)Our raised bar on the peninsula will be 18" wide. About 5" of it will rest on the supporting wall; about 1" will overhang on the counter side; and about 12" will overhang on the other side where bar stools will be placed. It will be granite and therefore pretty heavy - its 7' long. We didn't want corbels to interfere with seating, so our granite fabricator is routing the underside of the granite and installing 1/4" steel plates under the bar (every 18" or so) as supports. The routing allows the steel plates to be flush with the underside of the bar. They will be visible only if one bends over and looks up underneath the bar. They charged nothing extra for doing this....See MoreWill I need support for my granite counter where it overhangs seating?
Comments (3)Yes, you will still need support. Check the "Stone Information and Advice" thread for more information, but to summarize.... countertop support: Supporting the width of the countertop: You need a corbel or support every 30 linear inches of unsupported overhang Supporting the depth of the countertop: General: You need to support at least 2/3 the entire depth of the stone, so assuming you have 24" deep cabinets on one side of the island and your seating overhang is on the other side, you need the following: If your granite is 2 cm thick, then there can be no more then 6" of of unsupported span with a 5/8" subtop If your granite is 3 cm thick, then there can be no more then 10" of unsupported span - no subtop required If you need support, then to determine your corbel dimensions: . Thickness of Stone - Dimension of Unsupported Span = Corbel Dimension . i.e., an 18" total overhang in 2 cm would require a 12" corbel; the same overhang in 3 cm would require an 8" corbel If you are using a pony wall or cabinets with a depth of less than 2 times the depth of the overhang, then you need to provide support to equal at least 2/3 of the total depth of the countertop....See MoreOverhang support with quartz counters?
