Please help me choose a paint color

Hubby and I recently bought our first home and are finally getting around to repainting. Would love some ideas to cover this hideous orange! I do like shades of gray but am not sure if that would look okay with my given furniture/decor. I am also wondering if I should repaint the built in shelves or just leave them white? Any ideas or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Your window trim is white and the built-in shelves cover that entire wall. If you leave your shelves white, you're going to end up with a white accent wall - which is fine if that is your intention.

One option might be to paint the base cabinets and the wall above the top shelves the same color as you paint the other walls and leave the shelves and window trim white.

If you can find a shade of tan you like -- a light brown without any pink or yellow hue -- that would be a good neutral color for your walls that would go well with your furnishings. Consider a shade slightly darker than your sofa.

I'm in agreement with you that for your situation something of low contrast would be best. You could have the shutters more or less match the house color (or even go ligher, say a cream color) or a soft green with yellow tones to it. I would let the landscaping provide the color (and I'm so hoping you're not doing grass in your tropical environment) and let it be the lush counterpoint to your cool-looking light colored house. I think it would be beautiful.

What do the paint colors look like? I'm not familiar with SW since I only use Behr paints. Certain shades of gray look great with natural wood. I painted my foyer and living room with Classic Silver from Behr and it looks great with everything. I personally prefer gray paints over beige. I just checked out your colors and to me, they look very similar, especially on my computer monitor. The gray is not what I call a true gray. Here is what I have on my walls:

I think a pale tan with white trim and columns would look good with black shutters and red brick. I would remove any planting from in front of the proch, except annuals and perennials, to open it up. Add more flowering bushes and ornamental trees. You have a lovely house and setting.

Vongratulations on your first home. I think gray would be a really neat color, but you could also explore a more neutral tan or beige. Although my project is different, I'm doing a whole home paint job, I think even with one room the same process applies.

Ths is how I approached my project. I went to my home paint store and picked up a lot of chips. I put them on a white poster board and hung them around different parts of my house different parts of the day. Now this is where my analytical side comes out: I had a spreadsheet and was categorizing them according to my system. I looked at them several times a day and tallied up the scores. ( I work from home so I have the time to do this and because it's such a big project I needed to be this meticulous).

Once I've narrowed down the colors I bought paint samples, painted them on white poster board, and then hung them in the places I had evaluated with the paint chips. You will notice that the paint looks different than the chip, and the paint looks different on a white poster board than it would be against the existing wall color.

Once I was ready to commit to putting it on the wall, I painted a nice large 12 x 12 square on the wall in several colors. it turns out that my original choices we're very stark compared to the current wall color; I anticipated that because I'm trying to go lighter. So I went back to the paint store and am doing it all again with a new set of color chips that are a bit more beige and tan. Probably next week I'll be ready to go get some samples and paint them on boards and then paint them on the wall.

As a whole home project, I have 9 different rooms with different facing windows at different times of the day. with this potentially costing $5,000 (contracted) I want to be as sure as possible.

however even if you're doing this yourself do you really want to paint a wall several times? It's better to 'sample twice and paint once' if it's at all possible.
