I purchased a sofa in C&B even though it was a completely different style than what I'd been looking for in part because it was much more comfortable to sit on than the one I originally wanted from R&B. To my surprise, when it was delivered, it was hard as a rock - just like the one from R&B! I've had it several weeks now and it's softening up. I keep turning the cushions so it softens up evenly. It's not as cushy yet as the one in the store, but I'm hoping it gets there... I mentioned this at the store, and they said the two-cushion sofas actually start off harder than the three-cushion sofas and takes a little longer to break in. I love the idea of putting the cushions on the floor and walking on them! (How long will the sofa last before it totally breaks down? I have no idea. It wasn't horrifically expensive, so I'm not going to worry about it.)

Just got a new Ballard catalog yesterday, and noticed that they are now emphasizing that ALL their upholstered furniture is US-made. They have some really good looking updated, but still traditional styles. As for cushions - back or bottom. Just be sure that any sofa one buys has cushions covers with zippers on them. Most are filled with poly, or poly/feather, and they will compact and droop - pretty quickly, in fact. When they do, take the pillows/cushions and their covers to a GOOD upholstery shop and have the filling replaced. Bottom cushions of often used chairs/sofas, are best done with springs and a wrap of something with a nice crown. Loose back cushions are a problem with pets - they like to use them as a hammock and they always look like an unmade bed. If they are filled with a 50/50 down/feather fill, then at least they can be fluffed up to look nice. I finally gave up and just had my sofa done with a tight back - looks SO much better. Throw pillows are easy and inexpensive to replace, and the dog doesn't sleep on them the way her predecessors did on those loose back cushions. I'm far happier. What one must realize is that today's upholstered furniture, no matter where it is made, is simply not the quality it once was. People do NOT want investment furniture - a sofa they will keep for 50 years They like change and won't pay for true quality, thus the manufacturers (even ones like Baker), have lowered the quality for price point reasons. If there are no buyers for quality, one must make lesser quality at the price point customers want to pay.

I raised 3 rowdy boys and have never had that problem. Wonder why. I think that may be the only problem I have never experienced with home furnishings. I am astounded. I might have to have a party, maybe a beer bash, and celebrate one thing my sons never accomplished,forcing cushions from their correct position on the sofa. Now, I am pretty sure if they knew of this dilemma, they and their daddy could have seen to it that my cushions easily made friends with the floor, because if anything, they were all boy and real boys. You know boys with big hairy chests and huge calves, able to belch, play defensive tackle, make noises such with their hands and armpits such that the family next door could hear what sounds like passing gas, know how to whistle so that the dogs in the next county come running, men boys, not geldings, boys who go about their life's work with the same fervor as splitting huge logs with a small axe and one hand, snapping the heads of poisonous snakes with the flip of the wrist, able to scrape and paint, hang wallpaper without a tray, install garbage disposals and toilets, put down hardwood flooring, unclog plumbing, install lighting, take down cottage cheese ceilings, hang draperies without tearing them. They can lift and move large dressers and figure out how without assistance to get the grand piano from one room to another. If necessary, one can hold up the car while the other changes a tire without a jack, fly airplanes, but they never made the cushions push forward. These are boys whose largest celebration on being told they were national merit scholars was inserting a thumb into the jaw and making the sound of a popping cork. I am almost disappointed that there was some manly fete they never accomplished. I suspect I was buying the wrong sofas, although over the years they were in my home, I had 11. BeverlyFLADeziner I was just using this sofa until,,,, it was in my den. I gave away my living room set from my home before I moved to this high-rise. I can do an 88" sofa but I would not be able to have an end table at the end of the sofa, there wouldn't be any room to walk through to the dining room (without the end table I have 37" walkway). On the other side of the room I was trying to hide an ugly convector which is why I wanted to put a loveseat in front of the windows, the pan indicates the difference in the sofa length. I would have 70" for either 2 chairs or one 67" loveseat (I believe you are saying 2 chairs are more pleasing to the eye than a loveseat)? The second layout would work, the first layout, one would be walking into the chair.
