IMO, a sofa should be comfy from the start and a buyer shouldn't have to wait for the cushions to 'loosen up and be comfy'. That would mean the core foam is breaking down, which will happen over time, but I don't think you want to wait that long!

Yup - happened to me but I was surprised - didn't know in advance. We sat on the floor model that had seen a lot of customers so it was well broken in. When our new one arrived it was very stiff - I was heartbroken. Between normal use and teens flopping down hard on it the way they do, it was broken in in no time. What's the company that makes the one you're looking at at Macy's?

My sister works in a high end furniture store. They always tell customers that if the cushions seem too hard at first, to take your shoes off, place the cushions on the floor and walk on them. She actually did that here for a sofa of mine and it did work...I think they'll break in and feel fine.

Thanks for your help and stories of your own experiences. I thought like annz said, that it should feel right from the start. It seems like the rest of you though, have had the experience of the cushions softening up after they are broken in.

Ke13, I think the key is that they are made out of good materials. If they were just a wrapped foam, I'd be wary, but it sounds like they are made well. Also, consider the cost of new cushions if they aren't comfortable. Would it still be cheaper than the other sofas you've seen. It might be worth having cushions custom made to get the sofa if you love the style of it and it's a good price.

I purchased a sofa in C&B even though it was a completely different style than what I'd been looking for in part because it was much more comfortable to sit on than the one I originally wanted from R&B.

To my surprise, when it was delivered, it was hard as a rock - just like the one from R&B!

I've had it several weeks now and it's softening up. I keep turning the cushions so it softens up evenly. It's not as cushy yet as the one in the store, but I'm hoping it gets there... I mentioned this at the store, and they said the two-cushion sofas actually start off harder than the three-cushion sofas and takes a little longer to break in.

I love the idea of putting the cushions on the floor and walking on them!

(How long will the sofa last before it totally breaks down? I have no idea. It wasn't horrifically expensive, so I'm not going to worry about it.)

daisychain01, I'm so glad you brought this up. I was regretting not asking that in my original post. I even said that to my husband a couple of nights ago--that I wondered if you could replace just the foam (which is the firm part) and if that would make a difference. Obviously, that must be the difference in the comfort of sofas is the foam that is used? I can't imagine that that could be super expensive to do but maybe I should check on that.

charlikin, that's an interesting point and makes so much sense as to why I felt a difference in the 2 vs. 3 cushioned sofas. The sofa was a 2 cushion and then they had the same set in a sectional. Each piece had 3 smaller cushions--the sectional was much softer. Now, this makes sense as to why.
